I spent a few vacation days over the past 2 months (I have a LOT of days....don't use 'em, you lose 'em) cleaning up my mp3 tags.

I made the mistake of not putting "various artists" in the album artist field on compilations and put the "ft. someone" in the artist field instead of the title.

All is now fixed and now I want a recommendation on an on-line backup site or service that will compliment my two hard drive backups.

Your thoughts are appreciated....

I have some work to do on my MP3 tags too. I usually put featured artists in the title and the Featured Artist tag, with the Album Artist in that tag. With all the downloaded singles, there's no album title in some of my files. I want to put the song title in that tag. I have some genre changes I need to do as well. With 110,000+ tracks, it's gonna take some time. It will be a good project for when I'm stuck inside this winter.

As for backups, I don't trust online backups, and I don't like depending on internet speeds. I have my library duplicated on two home servers, two portable hard drives (which I swap in and out of my safety deposit box), and on four DJ computers. I think I got backups covered.[emoji1]

For me, if the album is a Various Artists compilation, then I put that as the Album Artist. The Title field only contains the Song Title and if it's a remix or whatever. The Artist / Contributing Artist gets the performer or performer featuring whoever.

As for backups, I don't trust online backups (and they shouldn't have my data anyways).

Hmmm...2 saying they don't trust on-line backups...my slightly OCD brain may re-think this...

Itigger..the one thin I NOW do differently is to put any additional artist (say any Nat and Natalie duet) in the song title..."Unforgettable ft. Nat King Cole" with the artist being Natalie Cole.

Mine are very similar, except like I posted previously, I use the Featured Artist tag as well as putting it in the title. However, I find that some of my tagging methods worked well when my music was simply for my personal use, but don't work quite as well for DJing. With my DJ software not having the ability to create custom sorts and add whatever tags I want to see, I can't always find tracks as easily as I could with the music library management application I used for home entertainment. That's why I need to make some mods to my tags.

All the work was for playing music on my phone with it's 256 gb micro card.

I had way too many artists - every artist with a "ft. XXXX" would show as a separate artist.

And if I wanted to hear a compilation album - say Saturday Night Fever - it was shown as numerous "albums" with each artist having their own SNF album...now SNF is ONE album and much easier to hear.

I do it the other way. Unforgettable-Natalie Cole featuring Nat King Cole. I think you do it that way because of your mp3 devices and how it sorted the Artist field.

edit: I posted this before I saw the post directly above this one.
