Would you DJ a wedding for $550 in 2021?

I think a lot of the disagreement in this thread comes from the differing views on the importance of MC'ing vs DJ'ing for Weddings. My own personal opinion is that good sound and good music are paramount, and can be supplemented by antics behind the mic, but not vice versa. You shouldn't have to...

A peak inside the Black Box

I ran across this neat little program that gives a graphical "Tree" hierarchy of what's going on with your USB ports - https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html It runs without installation. Here's two views of my laptop - My laptop has 4 USB ports, but I wanted to make sure my sound...

To beat mix or not, that is the question...

No question Latinos are dancing fools, but I actually deliberately don't mix Salsa. The group I DJ for are all 55+ and grew up on Salsa Dura. They like the whole song, and they like the pauses between songs to take a break and/or change partners. I once made the mistake of playing a less than 7...

To beat mix or not, that is the question...

"The Formalities are going away" They already left. 20+ years ago people actually danced at weddings, now they jump up and down. Which one do you think the sudo Club DJ/ beatmixer caters to? You can see it in Taso's vids - he does a great job, gives the wedding party what they want, and makes...

    How clean is your setup?

Looks good, but I think I'd get rid of the ProX sticker facing the dance floor! There is a sub-reddit for stuff like this - r/djsetups Here's an example that I think is using the same controller - View...

    Traktor Pro V3.5

I know there's a few Traktor Pro users here. The new V3.5 seems to have gone through Beta with a number of critical issues either missed or not addressed. AVOID!

Would you DJ a wedding for $550 in 2021?

Well then, instead of what I will do for $550, here's what I won't do - As Bob mentioned, you can often tell from the time of day the reception is, venue, song requests, approximate number and age of anticipated guests, etc., what kind of an event you'll be dealing with. I won't DJ a wedding...

The first reliable solid state amp

My first really big amp was a Hafler 500, a 48 pound Mosfet amplifier. I wired the cooling fan so it was on "High" all the time, and soldered the Mosfets into their TO-3 sockets so the pin connections wouldn't burn up from the heat. Another beast.

    Compressing Music

The Default setting of the Program creates a new file, leaving the original. Understand, but I prefer not to have another piece of hardware in the signal path - and IMHO, most newer music doesn't need any compression at all. My situation is somewhat unique. El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is a...

    Compressing Music

I think most of us can agree that current music does not need additional compression. However, I play a lot of older music that was recorded prior to the "Loudness Wars". These songs can benefit from compression when being played in a noisy environment , i.e., a bar. Rather than using a hardware...

    Alto TS312 vs EV Live-X 12

Of course Rick hardly needs any equipment - no one's dancing!! Alto started making a name for themselves with the TS112A - a good sounding speaker that looked bad, and weighed 35 pounds. Next, the TS212, a bad sounding speaker that looked good @ 28.4 pounds. Now the TS312, a good...

    Digital DJs and Playing outside

Another one of the advantages of passive speakers is that there is usually less of a problem with overheating - especially when covered with a black plastic yard waste bag...and still playing music in the rain!!

If you were to buy new speakers today what would it be?

I agree that the stick speakers look real good. However, nothing is as light as my modified Peavey PR NEO 12 speakers. The woofer already had a neo magnet, and since also converting the horn drivers to a neo magnet (actually did it for sound quality), they actually weigh 20 pounds - and I can...

    Surprising And Disappointing

I have a soft spot in my heart for old skool two or three channel analog DJ mixers - the kind you'd sit between two turntables - like Stantons, etc.. I watch ebay's actual auctions for them and if the price + shipping is low ($30 ish), I'll use Gixen to put in a low bid right at the end of the...

What is your favorite song of all times?

    1) CCR - Suzie Q (long version) 2) Skynyrd - Simple Man 1) I was in the jungle in Nam 2) Good words to live by, although hanging out here at ODJT makes it harder to do since I want to reach through my computer screen and grab someone by the neck.

    RIP Steve...

I had hoped to check in and find this was all a cruel joke. "Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated". Such is not the case - Steven Montambault, 60 years young. By all accounts, a better man than me - the true Spirit and Soul of what ODJT used to be. I'm envious of the Faith many of you...

If true, this is really lousy news. I never met Steve in person, but I have had the privilege of enjoying many, many banters with him here at ODJT.

I'm stuck for new dance music - what are you playing - current top 5 ?

Horses for Courses. While many here cater to Middle/Upper Class Patrons, by no stretch of the imagination is jumping up and down/one hand in the air/a drink or phone in the other, actually dancing...and I don't blame the DJ. Dancing for most people seems to be a lost art - and so follows the music.

I'm stuck for new dance music - what are you playing - current top 5 ?

IMHO, the fact that this question even had to be asked, plus the ridiculous artist pairing on some songs (i.e. Sheldon/Pitbull and Black Eyed Peas/Shakira) shows how low the industry will sink to produce a Music Video they hope will catch on. "Throw Away" music.
