So it looks like the DJ Expo is back in Atlantic City this year .. just not at the Trump Taj Mahal.

This year, the show/expo is at the AC Convention Center, but the show hotel is the Tropicana (supposed to be a free shuttle between them), which is a ride away. Runs Monday 8/14 thru Thursday 8/17. I'm hoping to go .. my daughter is getting married that Friday, so we'll have activity Thurs as well .. unless we have something Wednesday, my current plan would be to go down Tue and come back Wed (I'm planning to take the whole week off, but the Expo isn't usually open the first day).

The Tropicana is a long way from the convention center. I'm wondering if they'll be having the evening events there. Last year I only made it for one day because of events earlier in the week. Since was the first I've been on the final day in years I was hoping to win something at the big raffle but no luck. They dropped the few events that I really liked, the pizza party and the Promo only party at the Showboat things don't seem the same. But I will be there for at least one day if my schedule permits. Hopefully since the convention center has a larger floor they will separate the loud booths and have a quiet area. How in the world you can stand 2ft in front of the speaker and tell how it sounds with all the noise in the room, I'll never know. Just had me detailed specs and that'll tell me all I need to know. I have to remember to bring my earplugs.

Yea, they said the events would be at the Trop .. In 3 years of going, I haven't felt the need to go to an event, so if I go, I will probably stay closer .. maybe at Ballys or Caesars. The Sheraton attached to the convention center is a possibility as well.

The Pizza Party was an American DJ-sponsored thing, if I'm not mistaken. The Promo Only party was actually part of their own "Summer Sessions" confab for the radio industry. It typically takes place during the same week as DJ Expo, but at a separate location. For the past three years it's been held at the Borgata; prior to that it was at Revel. This year it's earlier - July 30st to August 1st. For that reason alone, you'll probably see a noticeable lack of star power at this year's DJ Expo.

Hopefully since the convention center has a larger floor they will separate the loud booths and have a quiet area.

They had the DJ Expo at the Convention Center from roughly 2003 to 2007. The quiet area was literally a separate room. The Convention Center in general is not a great space, but this was probably the only option left. There's a lack of amenities (the only restaurant is a snack bar in the train station area) and it's not user-friendly for some of the smaller exhibitors (if you want to move your stuff in and out, the teamsters are the only ones who can do it. No exceptions). The biggest downside is that people who want to buy things at the show will either have to haul them back on the shuttle or hustle them out of the convention center and then drag them down the street to the parking lot. Nothing is convenient at that location.

In agreement with Bren. The Convention Center is sterile, cold, and unfriendly but probably on purpose so each show can do their decor starting from literally nothing. DJ Times isn't much into decor.

The Sheraton used to be among the more expensive hotels. Convention Center underground parking is plentiful with fairly easy elevator access, far better than the Casino lots are/were. Forget about street parking.

The biggest difference this year has got to be the humongous growth of all the surrounding outlet stores and fast food places. It's not a gambling distraction, but it is another thing to do if an escape is needed. That's almost all new since the last time the Expo was at the ACCC.

One year, I tried making as many of the after party and vendor sponsored events as possible. After being mic screamed at by supposed professionals to"Give it up", "Put it together" "Make sum noize" and all the other overused hype, unimaginative drivel, and FM radio wannabee masters of ceremonies, once was more than enough. Music is always far too loud (front row rock concert loud) for any possibility of conversation anywhere in the room.

All that however is overcome be the chance meetings on the street, in the hallways, at the hotels, or prearranged small gathering for evening adult beverages in hotel rooms and gaming tables where 99% of my real world DJ education was received, offered free of charge from those who are the quietly successful shakers, movers, and innovators. That is was brings me back year after year; to learn more and to pay forward for those who taught me by offering what I've learned to anyone who might inquire.

Even though there are always negative issues with logistics and accommodations, it is not to be missed for those impromptu gold nuggets to be found everywhere; even some extremely rare ones in the seminars.

No thanks... show was absolutely boring last year. Nothing new, nothing exciting.

Spent more time walking the beach and watching the air show.

DJ Magic Moments: I'd truly enjoy spending a couple of hours tapping into your brain. Perhaps, should you change your mind, we set up something in AC where there are adult spirits and quiet corners? (FYI: That's not a come on personally, just professionally.)

As much as you have helped me over the years, I would be honored...

The show last year was just boring. I saw you, I think, but you were talking to someone.

If I can play the Bose devil's (is that redundant :) ) advocate, I'm in .. especially the adult beverage part.

Land o' goshin!saints preserve us. Sacre bleu! I may have been trapped in an inescapable situation and you didn't save me? Let me rethink my suggestion.

If you go, let's set something up where there can be no errors or "sorry, but I...". That so pisses me off.

That would be great!

I wasn't even impressed with the Bose booth. The F1's sounded different to me.

The system that impressed me most was the LD... amazing but way too bulky for a compact array.

Absolutely, Steve. I was looking so forward to hooking up and realized we did nothing to ensure it. Not so this time. I need to nail down my where's and when's so it'll be on me to offer a few suggestions, cool?

One thing I wished is that they would do at the DJ convention is to have couple of side meetings or seminars for more seasoned individuals. Let's say people with 30 years plus in the business. As at that stage interests are totally different than someone starting out or with a few years experience. Although I don't mind looking at the newest stuff and hearing the newest music. At 42 years in business I am looking for information on keeping me business, networking, planning for retirement, exiting the business and tax planning. I remember talking to Jim at Promo Only about the showcases at the Showboat. I was like "Jim you have no seats at the showcase". "You expect us older guys to be up all day on our feet then stand all night at the showcase. You kidding me. " The following year they put seats behind the mixing station.

I have brought up that Well Traveled DJ topic with a specific workable game plan to both Ryan Burger and Vinnie @ DJ T. Lots of excitement and agreement, zero action.

Yeah I figured someone did but that's why I'm only there for one or two days. I enjoyed the Mobile Beat show the last time years ago, I it great for getting business information & networking. But personally I really hate Vega, between LDI, CES, Nigitclubm & bar show and the mobile beach shows I guess I've been there one too many times

I like Vegas, but the MBLV show had a lot less exhibitors than AC did when I was there 2 years ago. I was only interested in the exhibits and I think it cost me $25. This year, it's $50. I will be next door this year in March .. may stop in if I have the time .. we'll see.
