There is no one right or wrong way here, it is simply catering to the market segment you want to cater too, nothing more.

Well said Patrick :)

What I can't figure out with you, is why you never look at the camera when your photo is being taken...?

You must be a thirsty hitch-hiker (yeah, I saw that comment on FB)... :D

Hahaha Eric always snaps those shots when I am not paying attention and I don't really see them until I get home and go through the pics

You gotta do some staged shots dude. I'm old and crusty, but I can make myself look like a young hunk, with just some simple lighting effects, and proper camera placement.

I do clean up well, but that's not my everyday normal look.

Looks great on the website though... ;) :)

Thank you for making my point for me....

Ok?

We start the "well, if you want to pay an extra $1000 for the DJ to wear a tux, that is your choice" statement to set up the fact that outside of attire (and face to face meetings), we offer everything else that the other companies in my area does.

My point was that if you offer everything else that other companies offer, why would you not also accept the funds that everyone else is as well - regardless of attire. Some people on here don't wear tux's and I bet manage some mighty nice coinage. I totally get your stand - it's your world, you do what you want to do. I get it. I'm not pickin' on you. I'm just sayin' that if a client says to me - wow, y'er cheaper than everyone else - to me, that means I can and should up my rates - ESPECIALLY if they're doing the same or less work than I do.

Once again, it all comes down to what the client wants. If the client wants an ultra-fancy, stuffy (because in my mind there is nothing "fun" about a tux), ordinary wedding, then we are NOT the company for them. Our entire philosophy is that you should have FUN on your wedding day, and not worry about what is the "right" thing to do.

Agreed. Attire and coinage do not = price. The product you deliver = price.

The only person I recommend in my area (who happens to also be on this board) does the traditional wedding attire thing, and when a client tells us that is what they are looking for, I simply give them his name, website and number and wish them good luck.

Got it.

Totally agree. I am in no way saying you're wrong. Patrick, I applaud you for doing things the way that you want to do them. I really do. I'm saying if you deliver a product equal or better than someone else, and your customer has justified that, why would you not up your price? Is your time / product / brand / etc not worth it?

Simple?

Many of the photogs I have seen
are out-dressed by the guests!

Amen to that! When we do the photography we dress nicely, but we're there to work....not to look pretty! Many times we start with the Bride as early as 6am and if we're doing the music also we can be with them until as late as 1am, so "over-dressing" would be ridiculous for us. ;)

notice most of th photographers as mentioned above and their garb and yet they typically get paid your price plus the wait staff total for the day or night. They dont wear Tux
Never have I equated attire with price. Like I said, we give the clients the option and they choose. Of the 3000+ DJs in the DC area, most pictures you see of them are also in the tux, so maybe it is just this area. As ittigger said - it is not a right or wrong. I just think it is silly for anyone to say it is out of line or ridiculous to wear a tux. We have been asked to wear overalls and a straw hat for a bluegrass themed wedding. :)

Blacktie, I would estimate we have done around 200-250 weddings in the DC area in the 17 years I have been doing this (from Annapolis to Manassas to Fredericksburg) and in all that time, I have never once seen a photographer in a tux, and I would be stunned if I ever saw one. The reason is exactly what Kirby said....photographers are CONSTANTLY on the move, and are having to bend over, get on their knees, get up on a ladder and be in other strange positions to get the perfect shot.

A DJ in a tux (or suit and tie) is the traditional, "standard" (although I hate using that word) attire, and many clients expect that.

I've also been asked to where a kilt - to match the bridal party. Lucky for me, they weren't serious about it.

NO! NO! NO!

you mean.... " lucky for the GUESTS they were not serious "

(especially the ones in front row!)

Didn't say it was a standard thing to see them in one, but we have seen them. To me it would not make sense for all the reasons you pointed out. Although when it comes to comfort, they would be just as uncomfortable in a tux as a suit I would think. :) We do about 350-400 weddings per year so we will probably see it more often.

Oh, I would bet that you guys do it right....
comfortable, but still respectful of the event you are working at.
but some of the one I have seen are WAY beyond "dressing comfortable for the job"...
they are pretty close to "whatever I am wearing at the moment I have to leave"

We do our best and if it's especially upscale, we'll take it up a notch or two. I especially like to wear dressy cargo pants while shooting so I can load up the pockets with extra batteries, lenses, etc.

We've seen a few like that also and can't believe that they would go out in public like that, much less work! :D

This is a topic my wife and I disagree. She says wear what the groom and groomsmen are wearing, which 95% of the time it's a tux. I always ask the bride and groom at the final consult. Tux or suit and tie? Nothing less than a suit and tie. Personally, I like wearing a suit and tie.

for the most part, i've always worn black jeans, a trendy button down shirt, loose tie and loafers. :) yes, im serious and no im not lying.

No tux. No polo. No cummerbund. No bow-tie.

I have white/blue/purple/black shirts and assortment of pastel ties to match.

Tomorrow's wedding I will be wearing a black shirt and white tie.
