Below is a transcript of a message exchange between a potential client and my facebook account. This does not pass the smell test. I will interject throughout the exchange to explain why I doubt this is any good. (Name, phone and address data changed for obvious reasons)

      I should have Call your office over phone but presently recuperating from the diagnosis of lung cancer and am still in the hospital of which I will undergo surgery in few days....
      I will be in need of your service from 12pm to 7pm,kindly get back to me with the Price for playing for 7 hours and the type of credit card you accept as payment ??

      Middle of the week for such a long event for an 80 year old birthday party. Very eager to discuss payment before price is even finalized.

    • Hello Marry thanks for contacting me. I hope your surgery goes well. I am sure we can get things lined up in a few days. I understand you will be unable to use the phone for a few days, and have arranged many events solely through email. I will need a few more pieces of information to get started:
      - A valid email address
      - A contact phone (I understand there are different circumstances, but still require one for emergency purposes)
      - Address location for the event
      - Approximate number of people you are expecting and size of the venue (this helps me gauge how much equipment to bring to provide adequate sound reinforcement for your event)
      - Confirm the date is WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15th, 2014
      I will let you know 12 noon - 7 pm is a lengthy event, and you can plan on a minimum of $XXX (we will firm up the estimate after the above information is provided) this does not include any projection services or lighting.
      Please get back to me with the above information and I will send you a link where you can login make the initial payment of 20% and additional payments at your convenience with the balance due by January 5th.
      Also, just so I know who to thank, or track my marketing, how did you hear about my services?

    • The event will held in my Grandmother's Yard at:: XXX XXXXXXXX Conway, SC and also am Okay with the Price ,let me know the type of credit card you accept as payment?

      At this point I did some research. Her Facebook account lists her as being in Missouri. Conway SC is about 2 hours away from me (I have traveled that far before so that did not make me suspicious). According to a few different real estate sites that house if for sale currently. Still no response for a valid phone number of email address. Still to eager to pay before price is finalized.

      Thanks for the quick response. I still need a valid phone number for emergencies, and email address to send the contract to electronically or I can mail it to the address you provided. It must be signed before any payment is made. I did not know the event was in Horry County from you r first request. I will re-work the price to include travel expenses (mileage) and put it in the contract. Let me know if you want me to mail the agreement to the address above or provide an alternate mailing address or email and a valid phone number please.
      Also please note credit cards are not taken over the phone, only through the secured website or in person.

      Provided phone number seems to be registered as a land line in California, tried to send an email to that address and it bounced back.

      Maybe I am being a little overly cautious, but considering I do not know this lady from anywhere, she is not providing full information when asked, not even waiting for a final price before wanting to pay, and now asking for a favor.... just very suspicious. Had something similiar to this about 3 years ago I got through email and when I contacted the suppossed venue they had never heard of the event. I actually did receive a very large check in the mail from the alleged client with a note saying they new they overpayed and needed me to send them back the difference with personal check. Since no contract was signed that went straight into the shredder... never heard anything else form them .
 
Ron, we got the same message this morning. I didnt go as far as you did, but it seemed funny to me, when I looked her up. I just told her that we are out of her service area, and left it at that.

sounds like a scam - though these type have usually involved checks or money orders.

The 'broken english' could also be a clue. Why is it called Grand mothers Yard and not my grandma's house / backyard? The term 'Grandmother Mother'

I've done events with just email, but that along with the broken English, the fact that they want your services without asking what they get.....easily says scam. Your instincts are correct.

I agree after all you should see some of the texts I get from my Ex wife when she tries to use speech to text.... Things like " I hate you you dumbass... Your not never going to see a dime you cheeky basted turd."

Customers always overpay for cash back because there's not enough ATMs in the world and everyone trusts a DJ to be their banker/broker.
Doesn't every one book vendors site unseen by email?
Price is never a concern just take my credit card number - whatever card you want, I got a number.
I'm all alone in the hospital with no one to help me but, I expect to have a crowd of people at my party in 3 weeks. :)

People do fall for it though .. or the scammers wouldn't do it. People lose lots of money on things like this.

Super Scam! Super Scam! What they would want you to do is to pay someone else money from the money they supposedly have sent you. Then they would take the money you get to give to the so called people you're to pay and you get nothing because it's not actual money. Run Forest run!

How they fall for it is all they will see is how much money they will make. At least so they think. Greed over rides sound judgement.
 
I have been through the same exact thing, but we started on Facebook, she then changed her name and went from 80th bday for gma to 8th birthday for her daughter when she got my phone number and started txting me. I'm just poking the bear now lol
