I've been using a cheaper external hard drive for the past year or so since switching to digital and ready to upgrade. I've been reading a little bit online about some EHD's that double as an automatic back-up in case your drive crashes.

Anyone out there have opinions on which brand name to stick with in Hard Drives, or better yet specific models you use and would recommend?

My current drive is 100 Gig with aroung 25,000 songs but would like to upgrade to at least 250 for room to grow.

Thanks for any insight

Kris

maxtor i touch 3
i terrabit / 1000 gig external harddrive
compusa just reduced them $ 539.00
i have 2 of them i bought them 1 year ago and paid $ 799.99
never crashed no problems i praise them
seagate, western digital have both gave me problems
i mix videos and i love my maxtors
also by bigger now you will use it up and its easier having 1 than 3 to makeup
the storage capacity.

or, by 2 and use one as a backup....
a 1000 gigs is a bunch for you Kris since you don't do video....
whadyathink?

I'll also put in my 2 cents and tell you to go firewire or usb2.0 or SATA and 7400 rpm minimum, with 8mb cache.

I'm no expert, I'm sure I'll get punted....

firewire or usb 2.0 is a must make sure if you 2.0 though your computer has proper drivers and you'll prob want service pack 2. I've had a lot of "This device can perform faster messages" and Got so sick of updating usb drivers everytime i put a new install of windows on a machine.

But anyway I use a lacie D2 I just got its 500 gig and can rackmount which is great for audioracks. It has firwire 400 800 and usb 2.0.

I also use a maxtor 300 gig and that has lasted heavy beatings for quite sometime. Can't say how durable the lacie i though.

I just had it on for 3 hours at my house and the actual hard drive was not very hot. The case has great ventilation.

I am going to leave it on all night and see how it does. I'll post back in the morning.

That seems like a really good price doesn't it? $93 for 250 gig hd?
