Nice reading! Yep there are those who are either too afraid or lazy to do it "Live" so they do their Mix at home in their home studio then when it is perfect they record it and try to play it as live. If they are so scared then they should just do Automix.

Bring it on dude -- I love seeing real talent live... :)

geez!
lip-synching the vocals of a song is bad enough...
now people who use pre-recorded music.....feel the need to PRE-RECORD IT???

What I think is worse, is somebody putting white text on a black background in a rambling article, and not realizing he's gonna ruin my eyesite for the rest of the day! But I digress... ;)

Individual style...? In some cases...

For example, I did lots of weddings -- you have other things to do at weddings. Half the time is spent rounding people up for cake cutting, and all the other traditional BS that happens. You can't do that when yer stuck behind a console.

When he mentioned the Grammy's, he probably has no clue about the advertisers. Adverters want a clean show along with the producers, and by clean, I mean as few mess ups as possible. If the show is not tight, people watching will change the channel, and not see all the nice, expensive ads. That usually means that vieworship will decline for the next event -- that means it's harder to sell ad space, and produce the show.

So, there's a lot more involved, than some DJ's "wanna be rock star" ego... ;)

What cracks me up are the DJs who try to proclaim themselves as "artists". Yes, I'm fully aware of what it is we do and the skill that's needed but this rant is pathetic as well as ignorant. We DJs, at least the ones mentioned in the article, push buttons to start pre-recorded tracks. They/we are not "musical artists" and we/they do not create music, at least in the tradition sense. Going on a rant that the DJs pre-recorded their pre-recordings instead of just playing their pre-recordings "live" is ridiculous, not to mention ignorant of the realities of major-league broadcasting. When there's a safer method for programming, especially at this level, then it makes perfectly good sense to pre-edit the tracks being played. Keep in mind that the show's producers need to know, down to the second, what the timing is for the segment. They don't need to have to contend with some yahoo DJ that decided on a whim that they wanted to stretch out their face-time on camera. Also, given it's a VISUAL broadcast, it also makes perfectly good sense to not have a tangle of wires showing which maybe .000005% of the viewers, which happen to be DJs might scoff at the setup. As for the rant about the backdrop media being given preference, hey, that's the producer's call. As for me, I'd far rather watch the cool media things they had going on than the couple of DJs bopping around on-stage.

You may fire when ready. </rant>

Funny! I always thought that the reason why DJs have microphones is to make announcements, including calling for someone. Want an example?

"Ok everyone, we are going to be doing the Cake cutting in a minute. Would someone find the missing Photographer and tell him, so we can have memories of this wonderful event! Thank you!"

Don't know about you and others but at a wedding or any Event I am being paid to provide DJ Music or Sound Reinforcement not Human Border Collie!;)

Maybe that's why I have a border collie... ;) :)

Sorry, it just ain't always that easy man. Sometimes, you gotta drag these folks out of the bar, bathrooms, etc.

I'd actually prefer to just sit back, and play tunes -- but it doesn't always work that way. You need to be able to adapt, improvise, and overcome. Having pre-recorded sets, allows you that opportunity, without disrupting the flow.

Sometimes, you have to play many roles -- so you need the flexibility to do so.

I do agree that there are times that I may have to leave my "post" that is when I either put on a long Medley or set my DJ Software or Controller to Automix. However, if I leave my post to go and hunt down someone then that make ME absent from MY post. It is the Party Planner's job to coordinate everything. Again, that is why Microphones are made, to make announcements. Very simple, get on the Mic and call for the missing person.
