I just came back from yesterday talking to this owner of this lounge in Orange, NJ about the possibilities of me playing there. My friend that played in the lounge that closed down played there one Thursday for the owners wife's birthday party on a Thursday. I covered for him in the place he is playing at now. He said he doesn't plan on staying there much longer because this owner makes excuses as to why he can't pay you all the money due to you at the end of you playing.

I used to play there as well but gave up playing there because of this issue. I covered back to back Thursday's in this place because of our friendship. I really wanted my friend to get the spot in this other lounge because I don't like the way he's being treated in the place he's in now. People been telling this stupid owner for him to get the stuff that people like to drink and they will come there and hang out. He's too stupid to understand the concept. Anyhow enough about that asshole.

My friend insisted I go to this other place and put my bid in. I went there yesterday and met the owner. He said he was looking for a DJ to come in and play on Thursday's. He wanted the DJ to play oldies and some Blues. That's too easy for me. They have a booth to setup your gear. Not a big place but nice inside. The place was remodeled. The one issue in this place are the speakers in the place. They only have one good speaker in the place and that's a QSC speaker. The rest are cheap Bose speakers that were made to use with the jukebox.

The owner said he had to talk things over with the other owners and he would call me. My question is how long would you wait for this owner to call you before you would go back up there to speak to him again if he doesn't call?

Don't hold your breath.

Me personally...I wouldn't wait for his call, and I wouldn't chase that business...but that's me, and I don't bother with bars.

Are you headed to the DJ Expo next week in Atlantic City Macho? It's only a hop and a skip away from you.

No I'm not. The thing for me is we're talking a Thursday which I don't get many private gigs for a Thursday. One lady that knows me asked me where I was playing at. As of right now nowhere.

Thursday? Why not just show up with your equipment tomorrow night, and start loading in. When they ask why you are there say "I thought you had me starting tonight?"

...It might just work.

Or they might call the police saying a crazy man is in here. LOL.

and why do you care what they have for a sound system. If they are paying you setup with what they have and do the job. Also those Crappy Bose speakers you speak of will be just fine for you to play the type of music you are talking about.

Why don't you just do your normal thing and play there for free one night. Bring you six mismatched subs, set of passive, set of active yamaha tops, and give the owner that djmachoman signature sound that you classify as "through the roof". Then in a couple of weeks you can come back here and bitch about how the owner doesn't know how to run his business.

Same old story bro

I mentioned the speakers they have because someone I know mentioned how they hate how it sounds. Trust me like I said to my friend we've dealt with much worse. If I play there I will just do my job and get paid.

A lot of such places have no clue about what is good sound and what isn't. All they care about is how many times the cash register opens and closes.

Oh well now I understand. Someone you know said they hate how they sound so he must be a audio expert and yes business owners only care about how much money they are making. THATS HOW THEY STAY IN BUSINESS AND PAY THEIR TAXES. One thing you do not do.

Mix,

I strongly suggest that you take time off from whatever you have planned next week, and go attend the DJ Expo in Atlantic City. I feel you should seriously go to attend seminars and listen to other DJs educate you a bit, and help motivate you to improve your business. Take a big writing Pad, and write down as much as you can. Attend the Questions and Answers session which I believe is on Tuesday afternoon, and ask questions that you have. You will meet other DJs. The experience will help you grow. Growing is something you have not been doing for years now.

The sessions are a lot of 101, and 102 stuff, but I feel it would help you out big time. Spend the money and attend the expo. Purchase a full pass, and go to seminars. It will only help you in building your business.

Sales 101. You should have mutually decided on a time for him to talk with his partners and make a decision.

"I understand you need to discuss this with your partners. Could we agree to make a decision by this Friday?

Now, I'd call him in 3 days, and when he says he hasn't discussed it yet, get a commitment to make a decision by a specific date.

FYI, there is only 1 of you. They know that. If they take their time to decide, they are telling you that they have no problem finding someone else if you get booked elsewhere on Thursdays

I had to make this post. I was just over my best friends house and I was talking about me looking to play in this place on Thursday's. His wife tells me a bunch of gay women come in there. I'm like what does that have to do with me playing there? It could be a bunch of gay men. As long as non of them try anything with me I don't have to worry about doing life in prison. I went there after leaving his house to see what the crowd was like. There were some gay women in there. Oh well so what. It was OK and the first DJ I heard playing there was alright.

Sorry I was wrong about the speakers. They have a pair of QSC speakers hanging up on the ceiling almost. It sounds good. Especially since it isn't a very large place. No sub in the place. It's not needed because of the size of the place and the seakers they are using. My plan is to go there later today to talk with that owner again and see where it goes.

I just don't see why you keep chasing these low rent gigs, whats the pay per night

I just remembered something else. This place has a kitchen where you can buy food as well. That's nice so customers can eat to coat their stomachs so they don't get sick from drinking.

I am at a loss. Is there anything really to say. Again he just ignores everything anyone has to say and just keeps going.
