I have been asking around and it seems there are not a lot of people who have done a wedding that is based on Indian themes and ideas.

I may have an opportunity to book a couple and although I am good at what I do I have never done this type of event and am looking for some suggestions/ideas. In my area the biggest ethnic group is red necks.

I am looking on line, but I am sure not every 'tradition' listed from India is going to be applicable. I know I will need a large inventory of bollywood music and I am working on that list and would welcome any suggestions as well.

If anyone has a lot of experience with an Indian wedding I would be grateful for your advise.

What I do know is there will be 1000+ people, Mostly from the grooms side of the family.

Thanks in Advance.

Send Jon Tuck a PM he's pretty well versed in the area. He's been busy lately but I'm sure he'll point you in the right direction.

I hate to necropost, however I am now in a similar situation as the OP. I have an Indian/Pakistani wedding coming up in July. They want predominantly American music (hip-hop, R&B, Pop, Top 40), however they asked me to mix in a few Indian/Pakistani songs. Being culturally illiterate for that region, I could use some guidance if anyone is willing. I've been googling and youtubing like crazy, however I can't really pin down a 20-30 song set that I'd like to have on hand for this.

Now before I get harped on for taking an Indian wedding without prior knowledge of the genre(s), she has been looking for a DJ within her budget for over a year and has had no takers. I agreed to do it in exchange for a decent review if she felt I did a good job, and I laid it out there that I am not familiar with the genres beforehand. She doesn't care at this point, she just needs music played, but I'd really love to wow the crowd with some Indian/Paki bangers to show that I can personally begin taking these weddings on the regular. Overcome and adapt so to speak.

As always, I'd be most appreciative of any help!!! Stay safe out there :headbang:

Can they provide you with examples? Like other music types, there are differences in Indian music and what may work in their "Texas" might not work in their "New York".

I too just got offered the opp to do an indian wedding in May. It's the ceremony and reception. A total of 7 hours with a mix of american and indian music. I have not done one, but everyone has to do their first sometime. I was hoping to find more resourceful info on here. I do plan on receiving music suggestions from the bride.

Check out the soundtrack to the movies "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". I believe the second movie has Indian culture music that was played for wedding. You may find some artists who contributed and then follow-up to see what else they produced. Also, check out the sound track to "The 100 Foot Journey", lots of Indian music in that movie as well.

Here's a tip. Don't just ask the bride prior to the wedding regarding song choices/artists. See if she'll let you email her sisters/brothers/cousins, etc. to get more suggestions. When I did mine, everything was great, but I still didn't have exactly what they were looking for. I asked the brides sister, and she spouted off all kinds of songs/artists. I asked her to come to the booth and search youtube for them. I wrote them down, and used VirtualDJ Content Unlimited to get them. They were literally almost breaking the floor when those songs came on, I mean they were seriously gettin' down.

Also, find out what region they're from and research the area, or better yet, talk to your local 7-11 cashier and he'll have some tips too, lol! Mine did, and they worked!

I actually spoke in depth with the bride tonight and she is going to give me the playlist from her sister's wedding that occurred recently. Also, her sister is going to be the MC for the evening too.
