I have a concept that instead of being DJs, we need to be Entertainment Hosts. More on that later.

Think about this! In today's society any potential wedding client can go to the local audio/visual rental place, rent a PA system that has decent music sound, get the appropraite adaptors to hook their iPod up to the PA, and voila, you have a do--it-yourself event. Get your friends to bring their iPods and everybody has the music they like. Some mobile entertainment companies are even embracing this by provding the sound re-enforcement for the iPod; mine is one of them.

That's why the DJ needs to do more. He can't just stand there and press play, he needs to be an Entertianment Host for all event types.

Here's what an Entertainmnet Host does:

- Event planner
- Music programmer
- Crowd pleaser
- Dance floor analyst; that is, they can read the reaction of the guests and anticipate appropriate music to keep them satisfied
- Mistress/Master of Ceremonies
- Personalize events to the client's expectations
- Provide ideas to make clients and their guests feel more involved
- Comes appropriately dressed for events
- Provides quality amplification
- Provides a wide range of genres of music
- Innovater; that is, ready to think "ouside the box" and work with the client to develop games and other fun activities.

If you stand behind your mixer and press play and don't get involved, you are doomed to failure.

I totally agree, you need to be able to sell that to your clients. Technoligy is a great thing, but it can doom us if we are not carefull and change with the tiimes, just like the machines!!

I think that is a great idea. You just need to find a way to get that out there, so people will look for an "entertainment host"

Yes, I agree that if we are to survive we need to adapt and rise above the norm, and according to your list of qualifications, Tom, I have been an Entertainment Host for years...I just call myself a DJ because when it comes right down to it, I provide musical entertainment.

But decide on what you want to be: an "Entertainmnet" Host, an "Entertianment" Host, or an "Entertainment" Host! ;)

I think when the bride sais she wants a DJ, she means any of the following:

DJ
Wedding DJ
Entertainment
Entertainment director
Entertainment Host
Musical Host
Dancefloor analyst
madman woomba joomba (that's chuck)

Or anyone that does a combination of these jobs heirin referred to as DJ.
I say "musical host" when I announce myself, but everyone in their seats will still call me a DJ. I'm cool with that.....

You can tell them your name a million times but everyone will still address you as "hey DJ"when asking for a request.

Good idea. There's nothing wrong with trying to project a better image for ourselves,

but...

let's call a spade a spade.

Sanitation Engineer my butt. He's still a garbage man.

Know what uh mean, Verne?

LOL.

Put it up on your website. Just say, this is what I do and put in the list.

Brian - my fat fingers get in the way when I type entertaiment.

"Titles" do make a difference.

I worked in the corporate world for many years and became VP of Marketing for a large company. I had worked my way up from the Mail Room to VP. As VP, I had NO control in the total operations or direction of the company. It was purely a "title" to get me into the office of our customer VPs. VPs only deal with VPs.

I have always remembered this. I do not refer to myself as being a "DJ". When people ask, I tell them I am the "President" of my company (which happens to be an entertainment company).

I am certainly not ashamed that I am also a DJ. However, to me a DJ is someone who works for another company in the capacity of "DJ". As a company owner (as most of us here are), we are so much more than just a DJ.

It's all semantics...as president of a company you will get a lot further when visiting a venue or dealing with corporate clients. Even dealing with a B&G. People like to deal with the top person in a company as it makes them feel important.

Like the song says...

"Hey Mr. DJ, put a record on, I want to dance with my baby".
