I guess I should have clarified a bit more...LOL...I'm looking for the mp3 or wav of that song that I can download.

No kidding...booked a wedding yesterday that's taking place this coming Saturday and that song is a "must play".

Well, I find that to be both a irresponsible and unreasonable request on behalf of the client. They should be lucky they found a DJ three days before the event.

It doesn't appear to be available for purchase other than on CD or cassette. Just play it from Youtube or something.

I'm in complete agreeance with the others here. If you booked a show yesterday for Saturday, it's on them - my deadline for 'must play' songs are at least a month in advance. If I find something that's not available, I will immediately get back to the client and that's on my deadline. With approx. 2 days out, I'd leave it up to them if you don't have it and it's a 'must play'.

I don't condone this in any way, buuuuuuuuuut...

User DownloadHelper to snag the YouTube video as an MP4...
Use dBpoweramp to convert the MP4 to an MP3...
Presto.

But I don't condone that kind of behavior, even if it's a last-minute thing. I've NEVER done it, and I'm quite sure no one on this site has EVER done a thing like that.

I'm just sayin'...

Of course, this post will probably be deleted.

Hey, as long as it's spelled correctly... yorofl:

That's an awful big 'might' considering that we just had an at length discussion about playing something from youtube (or any other similar sites).

Wow...they really want this song? They must have low standards.

LOL...I don't judge their standards, they're paying me to play it.

Local music stores and the Best Buy etc is an hour away from me.

And guys...I wasn't looking for what "you" would tell the client, or how you would handle it. My customer asked if I could play that song and I told them I would see if I could locate it; If I could then everything would be great, but if not they understood given the short notice.

They called me Tuesday and asked if I was open on Saturday...I said I was but would need to meet with them ASAP...and met with them that evening...we talked about the wedding for an hour and they paid me in full before I left their house. Although it didn't matter to me, they felt the need to explain "why" it was such a short notice.

I don't know about y'all, but I seem to trip across DJ's at every corner...I don't get bookings because of my good looks gents; it's all about serving your customer.

I'm booked for a high school winter carnival on Friday night and will already have the gear loaded for that; heck, why wouldn't I take a short notice wedding the day after?

C'mon, gents...don't lose sight of how your gear gets paid for.

This is not an excuse.

I never said I wouldn't take a short notice wedding. I have - and it's a panic from there until the show for everyone involved. I would identify what 'must play' songs I had and did not have and go back to the client with the list of items I did not have and / or could not get. If I can't get it legally, then I can't get it. Period, end of story. That's all I was getting at.

If it was me, I would have drove to the store - that is part of what we do to run our business. Most BB stuff is on Rhapsody or iTunes already too. You're right, we get paid to play what they want to hear. The question is, in this topic as well as the other one, how you got the song to play.

My customer asked if I could play that song and I told them I would see if I could locate it; If I could then everything would be great, but if not they understood given the short notice.

My answer would have been that it can't be located. Youtube is not a qualified "location". You are a professional and should be getting your media professionally - not in any way possible.

This short notice doesn't change your requirement to have legal media. We perform a professional service.

We don't either. Rick might.

it's all about serving your customer.

It is all about serving your customer - professionally and legally.

I completely understand how it gets paid for - but I'm not willing to risk legal issues on my name, professionalism or all I have either.

Didn't I say I didn't want to get into this again?

Seriously, we're not a bunch of teenagers or school children here. We're supposed to be professionals assisting and educating each other -and having fun doing it. What you actually do to run your business is your issue.

There's a million places online to download media illegally. We, as professionals, are supposed to be doing it the right way.

An analogy of this could be.. You pay for an oil change and the mechanic puts in 4 quarts of new oil and 1 quart of used oil from another car.

Better yet - you pay for a 3 tier cake, the first 2 are fresh made. The 3rd is 2 weeks old (and from someone else's cake) - nowhere near as fresh as the 1st two. In a similar fashion, you'd never know because it's covered (in frosting). If you're paying the cake person for a professional service, wouldn't you want to know that they didn't have a fresh layer 3? Then you could decide how you wanted the cake person to proceed.
