Hello everyone,

Just a quick question. What are your most requested songs at gigs. I am making sure my music collection will be what the people want. I do teen events.

Thanks,

Aeridox

The charts are helpful in building your library, but there is no blanket formula for gigs. Every party is different and it's up to you (as the DJ) to be prepared to go deeper than the "Top 40 Countdown". Location plays a huge role as well. You can't always rely on popular songs from outside your area. It's not as easy as asking us what's popular. It can help to some extent, but ultimately, it's YOU that needs to develop the skill to read the crowd and be knowledgeable about as many genres as possible.

Rihanna ft Calvin Harris-We found love
Pitbull ft T Pain-Shake Señora
Pitbull-International Love
David Guetta-Turn me on
Gym Class Heroes-Stereo Hearts
Gym Class Heroes- A** back home
Pumped up kicks
LMFAO-Sexy and I Know it
LMFAO-Party Rock
Dev-Dancin in the Dark
Adele-Set fire to the Rain
Maroon 5-Move like Jagger
Flo Rida- Feelin Good

SO TRUE! In my area no two crowds are ever the same. At last night's gig I was in my glory as the wife of the birthday boy wanted 80's tunes. When I dropped Lita Ford's "Kiss Me Deadly" the place went nuts........however what got em on the dancefloor and kept them there was old standards such as the Cupid Shuffle, Macarena, etc. Other parties I'll throw out some of this and the place could go comatose.

I've gotten so once that I'm sure they are liquored up enough, I can drop 3-4 tunes and know where it will go. Something that may help you starting out is you are playing for your crowd, not your favorite tunes. Reading the crowd doesn't come easy, or at least it didn't for me.....however it's the difference between "chokin" and "smokin" when you play out.

Best,

Paul

How true it is...that no two crowds are the same.

Gig last night was a fund raiser "theme" Mardis Gras. The group was heavy on people in their mid-50's and 60's with some 40's sprinkled in. Not much dancing...except when I put on the various line dances. I expected to be playing tons of 50 & 60's, but turned out they wanted Country (old & new). Close second was songs from the "Brick House" era. For sing-a-long they went wild for "Red Solo Cup." The classic rock set didn't go over very well. Some 80's country did really well as did the early Conway Twitty, Alan Jackson. Had several requests for 2-step music (country).

Even though there were not many dancers up front on the dance floor, they were moving in their chairs and in the space between tables. Had the tables been spaced around the dance floor I believe more people would have danced. So, reading the crowd can be easy or definitely trying your patience. One positive note, I'm going to be contacted by another KofC chapter in another town for an event fairly soon.

You really do need to do your homework and make sure you take ALL you music with you. In my case, I am CD and Laptop, but alot of my current music has not been imported into the external HD so I carry it with me in road case. But, last night I left it all at home because I was assured that NEW music wouldn't be needed...wrong! Fortunately, the MP3 monthly discs were in my external HD, so I was able to access...but the songs hadn't been imported into my OTS softward program. I managed.
