The thing about separating by genre is I have albums where the artist performs songs of more than one genre. For instance, several artists attempt to do hip-hop tracks while doing mostly R&B tracks on the same album.

If it's an album by an artist, they all get lumped together by the majority genre of what the artist sings. If it's a Various Artists album or a Soundtrack, they get sorted as such.

Yeh... I get it. That's about the only way you COULD do it. It wouldn't work for me because I like having all albums and tracks by an artist in the same folder (\Rolling Stones\Album Title\Track Title). I also make my own genres; like "60's Rock/Pop", "70's Rock/Pop", etc. If I used your structure, there would be a Rolling Stones sub folder in 5 or 6 genre folders. I also label "Christmas Music" as a separate genre, and lots of artists have Christmas albums along with albums of their normal genre.

I don't see where that should be an issue. I sort by genre most of the time but I also go to the extra trouble of tagging multi-genre artists by whatever genre the individual song is not what the artist does most of the time.
For example, with somebody as varied as say Neil Young, I take the time to individually tag each track on the album as country/folk/blues/rock/ depending on the song.

I do pretty much the same as you. I was responding to Ittigger who structures his music like this...
"'Music' is my root folder for the library.
D:\Music\Genre\Album\Volume\Track-Title-Artist.mp3"

I was trying to explain how it differed from my structure.

I also take the time to rate each track and then make separate playlists by genre and rating.
Helps me sort my favs or my "A" listers from my "B" listers.

I like that... I planned to rate my tracks from 1 to 5 stars, but just haven't taken the time. It would be very helpful if I had rated them. I should start by rating new stuff as I acquire it, but haven't even started doing that![emoji2] I always said I'd do it when I retired. Guess what??? Been retired for a year and a half and haven't rated one song![emoji2]

I archive the same way you do and then I just make playlists on that drive and then copy the playlists and the files to my separate DJ drive.

I'm planning to do something similar. Right now, with over 100K tracks, I have tracks that will NEVER be played at a gig... songs that I like for my personal listening pleasure, but most probably would not be requested at a party or celebration. I have full albums where only one song is worth listening to. I don't know how many tracks will ultimately remain, but I estimate it will be around 1/10th of what I currently have.

challenge your self sometime, try to do a party with Mobile Beats top 200 see how many time you have to vary from the list, it's actually fairly easy at a typical wedding

Or REALLY challenge yourself and avoid playing anything on the Top 200 list at a typical wedding. :djparty:

That's not something I'm willing to do. I'm not into proving something to myself at the risk of the party. I could care less how many times I've heard those songs. They are on that list for a reason.

Some parties have a lot of songs played from the list, some don't. But when they do, the trick is to knowing which of those songs to play and when.

I interviewed an "experienced" dj a few years back. He said he thought an important part of his job was to expose people to new music. He hates playing the same old music. I didn't hire him.

I totally understand you .. and that's what I use iTunes for - I can build '60's Rock / Pop', '70's Rock / Pop', etc ... playlists - and because most of the DJ software can read the iTunes DB, I don't have to reinvent the wheel for each package.
