Nixing the laptop...

I'm waiting for the day that a pair of Google Glasses and my Apple Watch is all I need (save for a pair of speakers) .. it's a coming ... wide screen HD video in the glasses .. motion sensing and compute capability in the watch .. throw in a phone in the pocket with 1Tb of storage and my back will be happy ...

Think this .. with a heads-up display and a motion tracking interface (in lieu of the transparent touchscreen) .. though you may look like an imbecile from the observers viewpoint.:

Nah - I'm thinking more like - streaming through the web - your 'audience' is connected via Google Cardboard and VR - 3d simulated club environment.

The stairs are the biggest issue... tight situations, not so much. My rack is less than 24" wide, so it will go anywhere I go. It's also very maneuverable. My rack is the Gator Cases rack, and it's lighter than most racks the same size (14U). For a noob like me, having everything pre-wired in the rack is extremely beneficial, as it simplifies setup and allows me to concentrate on performance preparation. I'm getting ready to add DMX light control, and having the audio side set allows me to add a little more complexity. For me, having too much to set up and think about prior to the gig is NOT a good thing.[emoji4]

Everyone's situation is different. Whatever works for you is the way to go.

For me, I like not having a pre-wired configuration that I can't remember what goes where in case something comes loose.

I have a laptop that has one USB cable into a mixer. Mixer has one cable going to amp. Mics are typically already plugged in. That's it. Power for laptop, wireless mics, and amp. case is holding mixer and mics

The ones I know with 'roll in' sets do have this issue.

You have an older Sennheiser in that image. I have 2 of those and one of the newer generation.

So it would be a typical show for you:)

Yep... It's an issue. Also, the more gear you have wired in your rack, the more wires you're dealing with, and the more difficult it is to troubleshoot. Also, just gaining access can be problematic. I have two 3U doors on the back that I placed as close to the important wiring as possible. Recognizing this potential problem, I've wired and rewired my system countless times, and carry a wiring diagram I can refer to if necessary. Also, I color coded (using wires of various colors) my wires in order to dummy proof the wiring as much as possible. So far, after 5 gigs using my rack setup, I've had no issues. I'm aware, however, that the more complicated the wiring, the greater the risk of encountering some problem down the line.

I agree.

Any big upgrades in the g3?

Nothing big for me .. but here's what I could find. With the G3, you can now scan for a channel and infrared sync it to the transmitter.

My main music player is just a basic dual MP3 player, used with portable hard drives.
My laptop is a backup...
and it can be used along with my ceremony system,
or I can plug it directly into a powered speaker to use for cocktail hour in a separate room.
I need the portability.

Lots of interconnects means lots of plugs/jacks, which I feel are always problematic. The sub highpass filter/crossover for my passive system is DIY, and I hardwired (soldered) the interconnects going out of it. 4 less p/j's to worry about.

I've had no issues with vibration... Being rack-mounted, in my opinion, actually protects a computer better, and it's certainly less susceptible to theft.
When at home, my DJ computers connect to my home network, so copying music or other documents to them is simple and easy.
I thought about losing power to them with no batteries like a laptop would have, but if I lose power, my controller, speakers, and pretty much everything else I use have no battery power either. Having SSD system drives means my computers are up in seconds when the power is restored.
I have one rack-mounted keyboard in my rack to use when booting my video computer, but once up, the wireless keyboard and mouse I use with my music PC controls both computers. I do have to carry an extra USB keyboard and mouse for backups, but I really hate laptop keyboards and mouse pads, which is probably the main reason I went the rack-mounted computer route to begin with. And I thought my thing-a-ma-jig plugged into that other thing-a-ma-jig that has a screen on it with a mouse was high tech...
