What's the feeling on other DJ's being in your booth?

I have had a very successful gig for 2 years now, and became great friends with the other house DJ. He works on Sat. I work on Wed, Thus, and Friday. For the last 3 or 4 months I have stopped inh on Sat a did a set and he has done a set when I want to get a drink or use the men's room, or even to show me a mix. We get along great and have recently done some gigs that we mix and battle each other.

The owner has asked that when I'm working I am the only person playing music. He didn't give reason, and I really didn't want to ask. What's your feelings on someone dropping a 20 min set when you are working?

I also have been told recently no longer to play techno, and not play anything that isn't or once was on mainstream radio. I also can only play the rap that's on our local kiss station, not the rap and RnB station.

I was bent I did a really cool Chamillionare mix with the whistle song and face down from red jump suit, and got yelled at.

Everything is great, I don't mind following rules. The owner and I are good friends. He was one of the biggest club DJ's in our area for sometime. Sometimes I just don't understand his reasoning.

Cam,

It sounds like he is trying to do crowd control through the mix, while this works it can also mean the death of the club. I don't know if perhaps your club is starting to attract the gangster element or not, but many clubs decide they can control this with the music mix/genre, what they don't understand is they need to control this at the door with the bouncer not on the floor with the DJ.

Go to the owner and ask him directly what he is trying to accomplish with the changes, then explain to him it is a lot easier to make those changes at the door instead of on the floor.

I don't mind...

I had a club DJ from Minneapolis (he spins vinyl) visit me last year and ask to spin some tracks on my CD deck (I almost never use it any more since I went digital). I said go ahead. He did some amazing things with the Sync wheels and channel slider that blew me away.

Now, I don't mind if they have something to add to my show.

You have to do what your boss tells you to do. If he wants to kill the show...it's his show.

The owner of the club where I am at does NOT want another DJ from any other club to touch the equipment. But I don't mind if they're in the booth with me. If one of the other DJ's from another night comes in on my nights, the owner will let them spin on my Thursday night if I want to let them, but he does NOT want them to spin on my Friday night. Go figure...

Wow...all hip hop from one radio station? God, the repetitiveness would drive me away no matter the price....

as far as other dj's....I don't mind so much. If they look like the part and have a business card that looks like they care, then I'm obliged somewhat. However, I'm not in the club scene and never let anyone take over at weddings unless the B/G has cleared it ahead of time....

At the last bar I worked the boss didn't care who was in the booth. I always used to have company (it gets lonely up there ;) ) would even let the guests use the crossfade when it was time to switch decks.

I only had one problem with another worker, it was the ex-DJ who had this bar before me. Funny he'd be in there bragging on Friday & Saturday night that he had a better gig. At any rate he would come in and request off the wall songs that were sure fire floor killers and then have his girlfriend come up and bug me to play his song. That stopped after I chucked him out the door one night. :D

At any rate my feeling is you have to wonder why a guy who already works other night at this bar comes on your night and wants to spin.. Is he looking to take your nights? I presume you have the better nights. Keep your eyes open is all I'm saying :)

Maybe the other guy is getting cocky and asking to get paid for the time he does sets for you? Sneaky way to make a few bucks and blame it all on you.

A night off is a night off. So tell them to buzz off. It's my night!!.:sqmad:

I have no problem with another person behind the decks with me, as long as it's not going against the house rules.

why not act like a band and stop for 10mins every 2x hours for a rest
now you also may want to look at what the law states that you work non-stop

I know our local laws in australia that we get a rest period after a period of time

here we get a 30min lunch/dinner break after 4x hours straight

I did this about 12x years ago to a club that demanded you work 12x hours non-stop for crap wages and they are now closed...

anyway you have to say that if you need a break you need someone on the decks or you will have to stop the music for 10mins while you are in the s***house

:)

You can tell the boss he can tell you what to play because it's HIS club, but when the clients figure they can just stay home and listen to KISS FM, his nightly reciepts will tell him to butt out. As for someone else from the club mixing while I take a quick break? No problem. 5 hours in the booth....I'm gonna need a pitstop sooner or later. :)
