yeah, staples had a bunch of cheap ones this week. need one for my daughter for christmas.

of course i bought one 6 weeks ago...paid more for less. it works fine, but I coulda done better.

I'm an HP fan, but their newer laptops don't have buttons on the navigation pad, the pad itself is depressed. my wife has one of them. Definitely do not like it. she got a mouse as she doesn't like it either.

our local best buy closes in 2 weeks. it's where i go my toshiba..well, it had to go to another bestbuy to actually pick it up and they weren't getting new stock at all.

Best Buy is starting to close stores down. Gee, I wonder why!

Looking at this, if IT WAS A 15.6' version with all the same features, I would pick it up today. Also, I'm assuming the battery isn't that great....4 cell batteries usually don't last that long. Maybe battery life is the downfall on this machine.

Does any one DJ with a 17.3 inch laptop? Does it look too bulky on the laptop stand?

My company 17" Lenovo is the same width as my 15" Dell, so screen size isn't everything (much has to do with the bezel size and aspect ratio of the screen). Even if they were similar, a 17" is really only 1.25" or so wider, since the measurement is the diagonal.

17" all the way. bigger would be better yet. Maybe dual screens even.

my HP i've been using has a lit touchpad, the cheaper toshiba doesn't and it's not centered..a pita. i took white tape and outlined it.

i'm getting older and bigger, brighter is better. a backlit kb would have been nice (my desktop has it..great!)

I've used a mouse now for over 30 years (since 1984) .. I can use a trackpad or trackpoint if I have to, but the mouse is WAY more comforting to me. Every laptop I have has one and I have an old mini corded USB one as a backup in my rig.

I'm with you on this one, Steve. Even with my new Microsoft Surface Pro... it came with a pen device you can use as a mouse, and you can use your finger (as a mouse), but when I use it with the detachable keyboard like a laptop, I use a Bluetooth mouse. It's just WAY more comfortable for me and I can do my tasks far more quickly!

I use 17" Pavilion dv7. These old eyes need the wider screen. Had a road case with fold out laptop platform built for 17" laptop.

Same here. Whenever I work on a laptop first thing I do is plugin a mini USB mouse. My Thinkpad's trackpad is the most annoying thing in the world (Yeah, I know 1st world problems :p ). Luckily, the UltraNav software allows you just use the Track Point to move the cursor or else my cursor would be all over the place with my palms brushing up against the pad as I type.

I have a pretty decent Bluetooth mouse from Microsoft paired with the Track Point for a while now. Overall, I like it but it irks me that it won't remember the pairing to both Windows and Ubuntu. Ubuntu only lets you either turn the trackpad on or off (which includes the trackpoint). If the Track Pad is disabled and the BT mouse pairing isn't remembered you have to navigate using the keyboard which is just a pain in the ass all together.

Yea .. the Lenovo Trackpad is turned off .. Trackpoint is on in case I forget the mouse or battery dies on the road.

I'm not going to bother with it. I want an I-7 processor and at least 8 GB ram for my next laptop. I also would prefer it to have a DVD Rom Drive as my current top laptop does not, but my back up does. However, my back up Toshiba is sooooo slow, and it hurts to use it.

Toshiba has what I'm looking for, but it's $949 last time I looked at it. Also, I'm weary because it's a Toshiba. All my Toshibas I have owned turned slow, and slower after 1 year of use. Of course they were all lower end models too. I like my HP, I think I'll stick with trying to find a HP machine with everything I want in it.

Trackballs for me, each of my computers has one and a backup. Yes I'm paranoid about stuff failing ;) .

Computers typically don't slow down over time because of the hardware, you know... it's because of the software. Keep your disk defragged and your registry clean. Disable services you don't absolutely need and keep the computer free of spyware and adware. Of course you need to keep your anti-virus software up to date. If your computer is really slow, do a fresh OS install and reload your applications, then get an image backup and store it offline. That way you can restore the image if your computer ever gets slow again. I have quite a few computers; the oldest is about 10 years old, but it still runs great. One other trick is to use a Virtual Machine for Internet browsing. I have a Linux VM on my primary Windows 7 PC that I use when browsing. It's very unlikely to be compromised, but if it is, I just delete it and copy a new version of it off my backup server. I never have to deal with viruses.

I have 2 ASUS i5 machines which were supposed to be for audio only so I didn't mind the Intel 4000 integrated graphics. Well just for S&G's (We miss you Ricky :) ) I tested HD videos on the system and it didn't miss a beat and CPU usage was not a problem. I have 2 Sony Vaio i7 machines with an NVidia card and yes they perform better but things with integrated graphics have improved. Hell my Core 2Duo Dell Studios have the HD4500 graphics and they also worked fine, they now run ShowXpress.
