Anybody Incorporating the Cupid Shuffle or the Soulja Boy - Crank That songs into your home coming dances? For me they seem to be getting the biggest response here... I'm curious how it is working for ya'll outside my region.

My last school gig... Cupid was really when the party started,, I had them after that song....

Yes, they work well.

And here's something to consider. As thuggy as Crank That sounds, the kids are line dancing which means no grinding. Administrators should embrace that idea as more of this hood hop line dance crap comes down the line.

Walk it out
Chicken Noodle
etc. etc. etc.

Sounds gangster, might be gangster, but the kids aren't grinding. Thats crucial.

Cupid shuffle is a very positive sounding tune. No harm in that one at all. People young and old love it. The video on youtube almost looks like a christian event compared to most of the crap these days.

Cupid Shuffle is the new Cha Cha Slide.

I played Crank That twice at my last school dance. It couldn't have gone over better. Looking forward to playing Cupid Shuffle this Thursday, I anticipate similar success. I enjoy playing both songs and could personally listen to them all night, which brings me to a question...

Seems like I've seen several posts on ODJT where rap/hip-hop/urban, whatever you want to call it, is being put down. I've seen it been called crap-hop, terrible, horrible, etc., and should be done away with. So here's my question, how can those with this view of the genre pull off top notch school dances when this is the dominant genre played at these events? Do you guys just grin and bear it?

I'll admit hip-hop isn't my first genre of choice and it does have some things wrong with it, but at the same time I really enjoy listening to it. In turn I'm very enthusiastic when I get to play it (especially at high volumes) and I feel it shows outwardly when I'm preforming which helps the success of my events.

Thoughts?

Yes, I appreciate the fact that it keeps me in business, but I'm also inclined to say that its also not my first choice in music. Fortunately I'm smart enough to know that as a DJ I'm rarely going to play music I really like at youth events or even weddings.

The fact of the matter is I took an "oath" when I got into the DJ business that I was going to play for the people and not for me. So out the door went my inhibitions about what was good.

Think of this site as a bunch of custom car mechanics complaining about the new Ford Thunderbird. Although it looked impressive when it came out, it really doesn't deliver performance to satisfy a custom car guy at all. But it may be what he/she needs to drive to get to work every day. But it doesn't mean they won't talk smack about it to each other.

As for weddings, I play what I like during dinner hour. Its an expression of taste. But I know I'm going to have to rely on old favorites to a certain extent to get the crowd going. Do I listen to it at home...no way.

I do like some of the cuts that are out now don't get me wrong, but you won't catch me EVER playing Crank that twice in the same event.

I see your point. Perhaps I came across too aggressively. I became a DJ because I knew I would enjoy it (seeing people having a good time and being able to enjoy practically any genre). I was simply asking if any of you played this music with dread, and if so where the fun for you was made up that is lost in playing music other that what you enjoy?

I didn't take your post as aggressive at all man....Post on brutha!

I don't dread the music per se'. I keep it mixed up. I'm very happy with what I play. The way I get past the thuggy sounding stuff is just to mix it up live until I like it. This music isn't a challenge for me at all. Its also not a challenge to listen to or understand. But the beat is whats its all about I suppose.

Here's a sample mix.

So this week I had a middle school dance. Played Crank That and it went over huge again. Actually, I played it not once, not twice, but three times (45min in, 2hr in, and as the last song). I was reluctant about the third time. But with the amount of requests I had for it even after I played it the first and the second time I'm pretty sure I could have put it in my playlist, hit repeat, and then came back in three hours to pick up my stuff. The popularity of this song keeps surpassing my expectations.

It's great that the kids (i.e. middle schoolers) weren't bumping and grinding on each other. Wish there were more like it to quell requests for songs such as Get Low (at least at the middle school gigs).

Crank Dat has been without a doubt the biggest song of HC Season, but I'm going recommend being careful with it. I used it last night (3 times actually, but the 1st two times I used a remix instead of the origional). When I did it the last time (4th to last song of the night) it got rowdy. The school faculty had be pull the plug on it (imagine 1000 kids doing the dance very agressively) 1:00 minute into the song. It wasn't the only time they had me pull the plug (Knuck if You Buck also got me in trouble).

I'm not planning on 86'ing the song as it is getting an incredible reaction, but I did want to let you all know that it could get you in the weeds :)

IF it works good deal unfortunately I dont see the value in this weak attempt at a proper dance song.

the very odd time I will play a repeat is #1 when I have played it way early when guests arriving. ! in 100 events.

I was asked at my charity event to play Crank That by a teen girl. Now, I admit I don't know this song, but I'm guessing it has bad lyrics, because she asked me if I could play it, but also was I ALLOWED to play it.

Unedited version: Superman that Hoe
Edited version: Superman that "OH"

The whole song replaces the word with "Oh" where profanities are used. This song can be used for my HC Super Strict playlist dance.

I am refusing to play PCD - Beep however... I thought that would prob be the ultimate 'you suck' song to the teachers.

I never have played a song twice no matter how big it is. I could totally see Crank that getting out of control. I still play it, but during power hour. Plus it gives everyone that requests it something to look forward to. Stored energy.

I don't usually play a song more then 2x and only if it is extremely hot. With that said, Crank Dat is an unsual case. Cha Cha / Chicken Noodle Soup haven't even come close to the reaction I'm getting at youth events. I wasn't doing youth events when the Macarena came out, but I don't remember that even getting this kind of reaction.

I'm assuming the "power hour" is the last hour of the dance. Well, that is the hour that is usually the most difficult with tight arse admins. They have had enough and the kids are usually hyped to the fullest. If the kids would scale it back a little I believe that things would go better for everyone involved, but whatever!

I agree power hour is the craziest, but if the kids are talked to before the dance, and then I come in an reinforce what they have told the kids. 99% of the time things are handles and actually my song choice broadens a bit and the admins are cool.

It all falls back on expectations of the kids. They can't expect the DJ to come in and make an announcement about behavior. Makes the DJ look like a wimp.....but if the admin says it AND the DJ does, then its usually cool.

Good stuff Kelly.

For my teen dances I do exactly as JT said and pound out the nights top three most requested (JTV's unscientific poll) and give them their favorite three before ending with the Sponge Bob show closer which reduces em back to pre teens before they go find mom or dad.
