things that bore wedding guest to death

The biggest issue is having a crappy MC. For you in the US, it is easy since the DJ is normally the MC. In Canada, it is usually Uncle Tom. Thankfully, I now emcee about half the weddings I deejay. This is due to 'word' getting around thanks to past brides, grooms and especially the venue managers.

This is how a typical 6 PM to 1 AM reception runs for me...

Cocktails
Grand Entrance
Housekeeping
Dinner
Dessert
Speeches
Slideshow 'if' there is one
Cake cutting
First Dance
Parents Dance
Open Dancing for three to four hours
Bouquet and garter approx. an hour into the dancing.

The speeches are done after dinner because you have a captive audience as is the video, if there is one. Once they leave they leave their seats, all bets are off so I make sure there is nothing left requiring them to return to their table. Let's face reality, after the formalities are out of the way, guests want to party and have fun! What they do NOT want to do is be interrupted again with something like speeches or the cake cutting. I very rarely do an anniversary or money dance.
