hey I have been wanting a decent drone but don't want to spend a ton of money on repairs because of the learning to fly it syndrome, any recommendations

'Quads' are pretty easy to fly. For awhile, at Hobbytown, you could by a MicroQuad for like 40 bucks. Also, see if you have any local flying clubs - sometimes they'll teach you to fly using their own or 'community' equipment.

a couple of options..
a smaller cheaper indoor drone - good for big rooms, garages maybe. Lots of fly time, no wind, since they weight nothing it's pretty hard to hurt them.
outside the newer better ones have a lot of 'self recovery' options - self landing, easy modes then fancier (less restrictive) modes. Many are made to be camera platforms more so than acrobatic racers (that's a whole different type of machine and not for a beginner).

I've had great success with Blade heli's and quads - well engineered, local hobby shop support when needed (spares, advice), and durable.

a good starter for indoors - Nano QX RTF with SAFE (BLH7600): Blade - #1 By Design

outside in the backyard when you want more - still has some self recovery and easy modes but can fly upside down..if YOU can!
200 QX: Blade - #1 By Design

I have the first model of this 350 QX: Blade - #1 By Design
they've added SOOO much to them now..geofencing and altimeter being nice features to have - it can't fly away!
But I got mine used for $150...hard to say no!

That's rarely the technology.
Look how many people can't sing or play music...so lets blame the guitar makers for that!
Maybe it's the piano makers fault that the last album wasn't a gold record?

An issue now is they're so 'easy' to fly, or so people think, they just buy and fly - no training.

20 years ago to get into R/C you had to spend 100 hours building the plane, then learn to fly with a friend/buddy if you had any hope of success.

A LONG time rule of R/C is "it's now if you'll crash, but when".

You live with various types of automation all day long - computer updates, house and fridge thermostats, cruise control on your car, ABS, fuel injection, home security, etc.

Airplanes use autopilot from takeoff till landing.

Agreed - however the airplanes electronics do fail as well. Look at how many quad crashes there have been.

Blaming the guitar maker would be stupid - blaming the person that put the aid there to make them believe they were better than they are is more like it. If the person that bought the 'aided' guitar understood that they don't actually sound this good, then that tosses it back to the buyer.

All I'm saying is that while technology has made some things easier (in all aspects), it is far from perfect (in all aspects). RC technology 'aids' are to help prevent issues, same as with Tesla - and just like with Tesla, the electronics are not perfect. In some aspects, these RC 'aids' make people think they are a better pilot than they really are.

My systems don't update until I tell them to (I don't trust MS updates). My house has a digital thermostat that kicks on and off, but according to what I tell it to. My cars, while they have cruise control, its never used. I also turn off all the cars computer rules whenever I can (some of the rules are just stupid) - and while I understand WHY the mfr put them there, I know I don't need them and in quite a few cases, can do better than they do.

You don't have Win10 then do you?
I never ever want my DJ laptop to update itself...and with 7 I can stop that. 10? Nope. I can stop MOST of it (tell it metered connection) but it still updates.

No, you programmed your thermostat and it does the rest. All by itself.

Your car has all sorts of things on it that a car 20 years didn't have - backup warning, auto braking, ABS, feedback injection - my truck can determine what kind of fuel is in it - from 100% gasoline to 85% alcohol and run on any of it just fine.

I am taking school bus driver training..last time i was on a bus was 1979...OMG! Sure, you see the stop sign and swing out crossing barrier...hah, nothing.
If you open the door with the lights on (and the door open with a button on the steering wheel, no levers exist) then the bus computer knows (or thinks..) there may be a kid on board - so when you shut the bus off an alarm goes off that you must go to the back of the bus to silence - so you are forced to walk the bus for kids asleep.
It has automated chains...tire chains that is. Air operated..can turn them off/on anytime you like. NOTHING to hookup, no getting out of the bus, etc. I wish i'd invented them - slick as all hell.

And that's before we go to all the hi tech diesel and air and brakes on the damned thing. Or cameras and radios and gps.

I like the tech - and it rarely fails. Can't tell you the last time I lost a starter motor on a car..or window failed to work...or 100 other things.

the only 'rule' my car has is traction control. Have to turn it off after every start if I want it to be off. My truck has a trailer tow mode - again, has to be turned on after every start if i want it on. PITA.

I came to the Win10 party late with my daily use machine. I have other machines I was playing with it on before it became the final release. Sure, the thermostat is able to turn on and off to match whatever # I set it to, that's not advanced computing or anything significant that would stop me from crashing my house. It replaced the mercury dial that was there about 2 years ago (which stopped working). I use it and it works in the same manner.

Vehicle proximity warnings / sensors are not perfect either and in most cases, are not available on a base vehicle. ABS is not available on some vehicles still. I'm pretty sure my truck (2012) cannot run E85 nor would I want it to. My car

The 'chains' thing sounds cool and scary at the same time. They can't be chains. If it's anything other than chains, it may not be as good as chains. Considering firetrucks and 18 wheelers still use chains, I would find it hard to believe there is something cheaper and better.

The diesel motors of today are sadly bogged down by EPA. The 'air' items are cool but they've been around for a long time and came from the 18 wheelers and motor coaches. Camera's are somewhat new - and a few have 'stop sign' cameras - if you go around a bus while the door is open, it takes a picture of your car and somehow sends it to the police.

I have to turn all my rules off each time I start too and yes, it is a PITA!

With tech, it's not a matter of 'if it fails', it is a matter of 'when it fails' - and you're seeing some of that play out now with some of the automobile MFR's.

You also mandate DRL's

In Nova Scotia it's law to have lights on in the daytime it's the only province in Canada to have that law but the DRL on a vehicle has been law since the late 80's all across Canada

Oh really, that is interesting, having to have all lights on during day time hours.

I will say, I wish the US had the same import law as Canada does, 15 years is way better than 25 years, but, I guess, that give me some more time to save up for a certain Nissan I want to import starting in 2024
