OK, still researching options for archiving my master library.

I want to archive in a lossless format.

Just wanted to know the difference between WAVE and Apple Lossless as far as lossless formats go. I have read info. on both and right about now, I think my head is about to explode. :sqerr::sqerr::rofl:

What would be the advantages of one vs. the other. When I do rip, I will be using a Mac to rip.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

From what I have read there is very little difference they are both lossless formats.

Personally if I was ripping with a MAC and planned playback with a MAC I would use the Apple format

I am actually going to use mp3 320kbps for performance playback. (Cortex HDC 1000). The lossless is for Archival purpose. This way, no matter what may come along later, I still have a lossless format already to convert.

Any thoughts about normalization??

Thanks,

I would use WAV, as it is pretty much universally accepted, whereas Apples Lossless, is not.

I archive all mine as WAV, no normalization -- If I need to normalize, I only do that with the MP3s. This way, the WAV is the original representation of the CD.

I also use AudioGrabber for all my ripping, which appends the tag to the WAV file, so no need to worry if I need to re-encode again -- all info is already there. Not sure what options you have for that on a Mac though...

Rick,

My only problem with WAV is finding a program that works with Mac that will append tag as AG does. If I have to use the archive drive to rebuild my performance drives, I do not want to have to retype the missing tag info. again. Does that make sense?

I just want to make sure I do this right the first time. Thanks for the help and advice.

I'm not familiar with what's available for Mac ripping Frank...

If you have any Windows PCs hanging around, I would probably use that for the ripping -- thereby not tying up your main machine, and solving the problem :)
AudioGrabber uses very little resources, so just about any machine will work.

You could also try running AudioGrabber under the Windows emulator on the Mac, although I haven't tried that myself...

Frank,

You can use itunes.
It doesn't append the tag, but it stores its own info in an xml file.

What I do is set my external as my itunes library and rip to wav.
I also assign my library file to the same hard drive so it is always kept with the music. In fact, set up this way, itunes can't boot into a different library by accident (if the external is not connected.) It also allows you to work on the database from any copy of itunes on any computer and will see it as its library temporarily.

Then you can simply batch convert all the files to mp3 (It will create an mp3 version and keep the original wav or apple lossless in tact.)
Then you batch convert the ID3 tags on the MP3 files from itunes protocol.
Finally organize by File "kind" and all the mp3 will be grouped togther.

Click the first one. Then Shift click the last one. The entire thing highlights.
Then move them to the drive of your choice (now with ID3 tag information in tact.) After that you can delete the mp3 if you don't want to archive them in the same library as the originals by doing the click/ shift click thing... only this time deleting.

Be happy to show you at one of our local ADJA meetings or DJ Idea Sharings.

If you are only using these as archive and never playing out with them. Then it doesn't matter which one you use. Sound wise they will both be exact. If space is an issue, Apple Lossless is the way to go.

Currently I am using wav, but am thinking of converting to Apple Lossless as the collection gets bigger. Currently I am using Wav as playback also because Torq does not yet support Flac and the Denon 2500 only supports Wav and MP3. I do not use MP3 except for my backup 2500 internal and backup mp3 cd library. Recently I found out Torq supports Apple Lossless, which is another reason I am considering the move.

Steve,

Thanks for the info. I am actually am using Itunes and doing as you suggested with the files using tag version 2.4.....all except the database part.........I like it though. I'll have to try it since I may have to give up the mac for a windows

I am looking at attending more meetings too.

However, things are really crazy right now. Maybe I'll buy you a drink and tell you all about it in Vegas.

Take Care,

Frank

Sounds like a plan, Frank!

Frank put your info up on the whose going to vegas thread. Would love meeting up with you and anyone else who frequents here, as well the rest of the DJ community in town that week.

I'll do the same as soon as my trip plans are finalized... not sure of the full travel plan at this time. I just know that I, and the rest of the DJIS crew will be there and involved to some capacity.

Frank,

What software are you using?

Professor Jam,

I am using iTunes 7.4.2 on a Mac G5. I am archiveing to Apple Lossles since it is smaller than wave but still lossles. I the batch convert to mp3 320kbps for my performance drives and backups. All of my Drives are WS My Book 320 gig drives formatted to Fat 32 so I can rip on either a windows or Mac machine.

I know I can batch convert to wave if the need should arise. I am using the Cortex HDC 1000 for playback. I know it is not a true CPS, but for now it does suite my needs and budget. I took a VERY HARD financial hit after all my knee surgeries over the last year and a half. I think you might have seen some post on the other board.

Anyway, any advice you care to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I've got to go shovel snow now. Have a great night.

Frank

Booch how rude. If he watches his knees how will he be sure hes shoveling straight, ya big dummy?

You mean I was supposed to shovel straight??????? That's what I was doing wrong.

Booch, thanks for the thoughts about the knee. It actually held up well. A little pain, but nothing a stiff shot of your Kool- Aide won't fix. Maybe you can mix up a batch for Vegas. :sqwink::sqwink:

They say the knee will survive a five story fall and still function. Now me on the other hand, I'll be in a body cast. Go Figure. Hey maybe I can get through 2008 with no knee surgery. I'll be getting through it with no wife, which is actually not a bad thing.

Well, I must get back to ripping. Good Night All.
