I have to do a long run of XLR cable for our ZXA1's for tomorrows event. How long can you safely run XLR cables before you get a decrease in sound quality.

After measuring it out, it looks like we need to do a 175 foot run to the gardens, next to the main area.

Well, I have done 75 ft with no trouble. I guess between the mixer and the active speakers, you should be okay. Set it up at home and try it.

Now, I'll ask....Why would you want to operate from that kind of distance? Don't you have a ceremony rig or something?

We are providing sound to the main 'tent' area and the gardens which are adjacent to them. The same music, and announcements are going to be played in both areas.

We only have 1 main system at the moment and have no way of sending audio to the second area wirelessly

Thankfully power is already in that area so we don't have to worry about that. It's just the audio at the moment.

The distance would not concern me so much with regard to loss of sound as it would for delay if you have sound coming from the other area in to this one, although it should be substantially below the direct SPL coming from the ZXa1s in that area. My other big concern would be difference in ground potential between the two power sources.

All in all, though, I'm sure you'll be just fine.

Thanks Ben. The ZXA1's are going to be at a much much lower volume, Basically just background music for that area.

Should I just run the power from our main source? I am pretty sure I have 200' of 12/3 power cords so that wouldn't be a problem.

I would try it with the different power sources first. Any time I can avoid 200' of extension cord I prefer that method. LOL.

I would be more concerned about running 200' of power than I would XLR. I've ran about 90' or so and it worked out OK. I've seen snakes running 100+ feet and there was no noticable degredation in the sound quality

Yep. I agree on both counts, as I used to manage the AV department for a convention center. We ran 100+ feet of XLR all the time with no issues that I can recall... Now, power.... :sqerr:

My live sound audio snake is 32 X 200ft And it sounds Great!

I have a set of 150ft XLRs that i use from time to time...They work with no issues
