Good tip, but only one question. What kind of dollar stores do you have down there? Ours are just cheap junk.
We have some real good ones that sell Brand Name Stuff and then there are the Cheapie Dollar stores too. You have to know what to buy.

Good tip. The coating on these are nicer to light stands unlike my Chauvet safety cables which have scratched my stands up some.
I do not go to Dollar General. I go to a staore called King Dollar where they buy surplus items from Brand name manufacturers. The Dollar stores do not make their own. They buy overruns, surplus stock and closed warehouse stock.
Ah, that makes a difference. Here in IN, we have a store called Family Dollar & Dollar General (refered to as dollar stores) .... both have cheap stock items.
We have those here too. They those two do tend to have cheapo stuff. There is another good store here called the .99Cents store (A big chain store) where you can get good stuff, then there is Dollar Empire and a host of other $1.00 surplus stores.
Maybe a suggestion: make sure to identify exactly where you're talking about. Don't leave the wrong impression with someone that using inferior products is acceptable.
To Houston's point the ".99 Only" branded stores do carry a lot of name brand products. The operate in only a few states though. http://www.99only.com
I make all my own safety cables. That way I can make them custom length.
The cable Canute is showing will work fine but its really overkill for most any light a mobile DJ would use.

Most of my LED fixtures weigh less than those heavy duty safety cables!
I could use a few zip ties on mine and still be safe...
especially since they won't drop like a hangmans noose.
Of course, if you're talking about large fixtures, moving heads or scanners...
it's a well spent purchase!
