My family had the Monkey-Wards version, only we were poor so we had an 8-track, not a real-to-real. We bought it with our first color TV, when my dad came back from his 3rd tour in Vietnam. Oh and to add to the note it was all housed in our brand new 14x65 trailer with a tilt out.

All the above is true, it is not a rub on poor trailer trash, as I was one :)

That sure brings back memories. We didn't have one, the big consoles were an expensive luxury in their day. Never had a color television neither.

Several of the neighbors had 'em and we'd take our records over to listen to 'em on the big console stereo. Man, that was something for a kid with a little Mickey Mouse record player at home. :)

Later on I got into the repair biz. Dug into a lot of 'em over the years. By this time they were getting smaller. The stereo parts rarely gave trouble, it was the TV sections that broke like clockwork.

And the radio sections were often short on IF stages. Reception was never all that great. Capehart and Curtis Mathes were notorious for this. $1100.00 cabinets housing maybe $11.00 worth of electronics. I had a $14.00 transistor radio that got better reception than the neighbors' high-dollar console stereos.

Most had smallish speakers, despite the huge cabinet. Magnavox consoles had a nice speaker system, 15s and a horn on each side. :)

Wiseguy!!! Where is my Voodoo Doll. I need a Black one this time! Its fixing to get dark up in here! :djalien:
I can't help myself. That was too good to resist a jab.

Honestly I never saw one that had a reel to reel built in. I remember the one we had was a built in 8 track tape player. They were a nice looking peice of furniture. They were heavy. They were built that way because they weren't designed for mobile DJ work. LOL.

My mother law had one (with 8-Track, not R2R)
In fact this one came with two additional satellite speakers that KICKED A**!!
Long after the console unit died, I was still using the speakers in my van!

Never could figure out how to use the EJECT switch on a turntable like that.
