Anybody here ever done a wrestling event?

Randy, please elaborate on the "editing down". You've picked my curiosity.

I know that the WWE, particularly on their taped shows, will "sweeten" crowd noise depending on who they want the audience to cheer for. I've also heard that they will turn down the crowd mics to limit booing if it's a crowd hostile to a particular wrestler they want to "push"

Hmmm....never knew that...I do know that the ring floor has a number of mic's under it to enhance the thuds heard at the venue and on TV.

Been to a few WWF and WWE events...always with great seats.

Once had Andre The Giant walk by me as he walked in...I reached up to gently slap his back and only reached his shoulder blade - a huge man! Saw him get body slammed by Hulk Hogan that night.

Whether or not you watch/enjoy it, you gotta give credit for the extreme physicality!

I watch WWE fairly religiously on Monday nights. I also watch the big pay per views on the WWE network online now. The lesser important PPV events like Fast Lane or Payback I usually skip, but the big ones like Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, and Summer Slam I make it a point to watch. My younger brother is a real big WWE Fan so every Monday night we are usually texting each other about the matches we are watching on WWE. It's almost the only communication I have with him since he is so busy with his job and he lives 55 miles away. I might see him once over the summer, then won't see him again until Christmas.

I will say that the LIGHTING at WWE events is off the chain. Major DMX with a lighting tech team putting their light shows together. ...Plus the pyro technics...Usually at least one entrance with a wrestler and flames shooting off from some where.

Undertaker still wrestles...The Big Events at Pay Per Views. ...Rarely is he on Monday night Raw...maybe one or two times before a big match to hype the match up. The Man is like 52 years old at this point, but can still destroy other wrestlers...you can tell his stamina is certainly much lower than it was just 6 or 7 years ago though.

That's the client's expectation .. the audience has a different one.

There's no evidence of that - you're interjecting your personal preference (or fear to be more exact.)

I can be pretty damn loud for $1000, despite what anyone expects. :)

Why would it be MY fear .. ?

Having been in that audience, I can only speak from experience.

You've never experienced this client's event or this client's audience - so, you're negative characterization of his expectation is without merit.
Unless and until you visit one of his events the only basis for your claim is fear that it doesn't live up to your expectation, or what you've decide it should be.

He has only a $1000 to up his game (this isn' his first rodeo) so, your assumptions about his game are over-blown. This event is no bigger than a Prom.

Actually, if you READ what I wrote ... wasn't talking about the "client's" needs .. was talking about the client's paying customer's wants. And I'll stand by my assertion of what they are looking for .. in general.

The decision is whether the OP can reconcile the needs of a $1K wielding client, with the anticipated desires of the attending public. If they feel they can .. bravo .. I was opining that the task is most likely a tough one .. and I disagree about a comparison to a prom .. chive on.

I watch both Monday Night Raw and Smack Down. I just started watching TNA wrestling. I watch them because I wish that could have been me making the big bucks. One of my favorites now is John Cena. Can't wait to see him come back after he heals.

Do you think I could make it to be a professional wrestler at 57? LOL. Just kidding. I can hardly walk good some days.

I didn't watch for years, really since the attitude era, but my girls started a few years ago and I got back in to it I watch Raw and most of the PPV events occasionally Smackdown. Wrestling is a male soap opera.

WWE is the pinnacle of wrestling companies. They are what the others should aspire to at least from a production standpoint they are right on the mark with everything they do.

I think we may be overthinking this a bit. It's not WWE quality these guys are looking for it's a small house show they want loud and ugly. Assuming an unobstructed room put 2 tops where they come out spread 2 down a wall away from that and throw two subs with them and you have an easy grand for a few hours work

Funny stuff:

*My grandmother used to love "pro" wrestling, back in the old-old days (pre Samoan Brothers; am I hallucinating if I think I remember her watching "Gorgeous George?")... Anyway, her two favorites were Lawrence Welk and wrestling!

*One time, I was late to a gig set-up, and had sketchy directions as it was... I turned the wrong way and wound-up at the wrong fire hall. But I thought "this must be it," because it was a Saturday night and the parking lot was full... But NOOooo, it was the local pro wrestling outfit putting on a show. I couldn't believe this kind of thing happened on the local level, but the place was packed, and the crowd was whipped-up somethin' fierce. I ran to the van to get back on the road and find my calm party...

I have read what you wrote. The audience is HIS paying public not yours. He is not looking for a producer. He's offering $1000 for you to meet HIS desires. You are not being asked to anticipate audience "desires."

Listen to the customer - his priorities are clear. There's nothing here to reconcile. You simply want to change his priorities.

I have read what you wrote, and your position is that you want to tell this guy how to run his wrestling shows, and that is NOT what he has requested.

The audience is HIS paying public not yours. He is NOT asking you to anticipate or please the desires of his attending public. He is not looking for a producer. He's offering $1000 for you to meet HIS desires.

Nooo .. wrong again .. I was telling the OP to understand the other issues involved .. that's all. I could care less about the wrestling guy .. he's not MY customer.

Issues that don't exist.
The audience is not the decision maker. In fact, they don't even expect there to be music - this is a "new" step up for this show.

No, but the audience is the consumer of the entertainment. The OP would need to decide if appeasing the customer is sufficient .. sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. Not my call.

If I had been open, I would have taken this job, at the budgeted rate. It would have been an interesting challenge. In all honesty, I don't think my rig is what's needed but it obviously would provide more than his budget paid for. As it is though, the prospect emailed me to let me know he did find someone. He also left open the possibility that he'd like to work with me on future events.

Go check out what they're doing .. maybe you'll see what is or isn't working and know what's in store and how to price the next one.
