In the same vein as Papa's "bands you think are overrated" thread......how about the opposite? Bands/artists that you feel are underrated/underappreciated? Why?

I will start my own biased list....

1. Sammy Hagar - The guy put up with his share of egomaniac genius guys...like Ronnie Montrose and Eddie Van Halen....he can sing, play guitar, and party his ass off. He is 60 years old, and can still kick ass!
2. Joe Satriani - This guy helped put Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett of Metallica on the map. Unbelievable player, albeit not a great voice.
3. Triumph - Great songs......not appreciated enough.
4. David Lee Murphy - Great singer, and songwriter. Tells stories, and only really gets any credit for "Dust On the Bottle"....
5. Vince Gill - guy can sing, and play his ass off. Great artist...
6. Shinedown - these guys are finally getting a lot of press. They have been kicking ass for 3 straight albums, and on the road constantly.
7. Godsmack - These guys really can play....all of the band. Not a better rock band out right now, in my mind. Sully Erna sings ballads, screams rockers, plays guitar, and is a great drummer. Robbie in the band can play the guitar in many styles, and Shannon Larkin can pound the skins better than any rock drummer today IMHO.
8. Stevie Wonder - not like he isnt appreciated, but I really like what he does, on the mic and the piano. His concerts always bring a huge show, and great band.
9. Buddy Guy - have you ever seen this guy live? He has stage presence like no other, and typically can make anyone else playing guitar look dumb. The guy is old, but still rocks!

Ok guys, let me see your choices....

Not just bands, but artists, too!

-Jakob Dylan...always being overshadowed by his father's supposed legacy, this guy's sexier looking and has a WAYYY better voice!

-The Counting Crows

I can't think of any others off-hand, but there might be another post later. :)

He actually grew up in the area I grew up in and I saw him play when he was still a teenager in one of his first bands, Souls At Zero. He is an excellent drummer, but Portnoy from Dream Theater is still the best out there IMO.

As far as underrated goes:

The Offspring - They went through their funny period with the Pretty Fly For A White Guy stuff, but these guys know how to do hard radio rock better than anyone out there.

Queensryche - Never really got the recognition they deserves. Tate has one of the best voice of any rock group out there, and is an incredibly talented songwriter.

Good Charlotte - Now stop laughing and go back and listen to The Young and The Hopeless disc. It is one of the true classics of the pop-rock genre. They need to get back to that style and away from the dance rock stuff they are doing now.

Our Lady Peace - They never really broke into the mainstream in the USA, but any rocker in Canada will tell you they are the true great Canadian rock band, and not those other guys :)

Agreed with the mention of Roy Clark. I got to see him in concert in Norfolk when I was a pup. He can play several instruments, all of them well. :)

Kacey Jones is underappreciated, I think. She's released some albums and singles over the years with a comedy flair. But she's never gotten mainstream airplay. Her single Never Wear Panties to a Party is one we've used for the garter. It's a hoot. :D

John Hiatt - Never got alot of credit in the mainstream

Steve Earle - Known for Copperhead Road but his best stuff came after that and his jail time

Shooter Jennings - By his own choice is falling in the shadow of his father but he is a helluva singer/songwriter

I guess the one band I always felt was under appreciated was "GOLDEN HORSESHOE" later on that band became "AMBER" still under appreciated!

One of my favorites....Bodeans.

When I was working radio in New Mexico, I was turned on to these guys. Their "Joe Dirt Live" double cd set is a rocker! I had a chance to see them live as well....incredible live band.

Did they do the theme song for Party Of Five?

Jack Black/TenaciousD. I don't know how many folks like him/them, I'm a big fan. I wish they had made more songs when they were younger, hungrier and struggling to make it.

Kim Carnes - never able to follow up on the success of Bette Davis Eyes

Joan Jett - there's just something 'bout the woman that makes me want to buy her music

Blue Rodeo - never given a chance to shine in the US

Saga - great CDN band, weren't able to break into the US market

Kinks
Wishbone Ash
Todd Rundgren
Pat Travers
John Mayall
Robin Trower
Neville Brothers
Delbert McClinton
etc., etc., etc..... :sqwink:

Guitar Town - Has to be one of my 10 favorite tunes.....

Finger 11; a band the should be bigger....also...Simple Plan...for an "alternative" band they've written some very poignant lyrics
