Cleaner Song Cuts

So if you change the pitch do you need permission too? You would be changing the intended way it's listened to

I got to agree with Nick if it's too much stress for me to worry about if I should further clean the radio edit. I would estimate that at at least 60% of my dances I get asked for this one....And depending on the crowd I may or may not play the clean one

Jeff Changing the pitch while playing at a Live Event does not require Permission. Recording what one changes and then using it for Commercial gain creates a gray area. The Recording part is highly questionable and can be misinterpreted. Fact is, the Original Recording has Copyrights and belongs to the artist, not the person who decides to alter it without permission.

Technically, wouldn't not playing a song in its entirety and mixing it into another song be "altering the music"

Playing is different from Altering + Recording.

If we're strictly interpreting and adhering to the law and common music business practice, the recording does not belong to the artist (often not the song content either, but don't get me started...). The recording belongs to the record company. While the grey area Houston mentioned may exist (I'm not so sure that it does), you will 99.99999% NEVER find anyone at a label asking you not to play one of their tracks due to the fact that you made an edit. Just nah gon' happen.

Soooo: >>>>I use Sound Forge Pro either reversing or replacing the word<<<< This, or Ausuum's use of Adobe Audition, is often a great way to do it. I make my own edits all the time. No arrest record or lawsuits.

As to the rest of this thread-- Why does everything have to become an existential philosophical debate, when the OP was just looking for a simple answer to his questions????????!!!!????!!!?????? Swear if you want to; don't if you don't. I actually don't give people a hard time about it unless there are women and children about, but I don't like it myself either. And, like Nick, I feel strongly about it. Strongly enough to know that if someone is using it as a "guage" to see whether or not I'm the type of person they want to talk to, they should know already and rest assured-- I don't want to talk to them... Play your mind games somewhere else.

Simple questions sometimes aren't so simple.

Nick feels strongly on one side of the issue and others just as strongly on the opposite side. One's feelings as to appropriateness will dictate an answer, everything from here's how to do it to why the heck are you doing it .. as have played out above.

I think it's healthy to hear the different sides of the debate, as we all need to make the choice what to do with the songs we are asked to play.

I completely agree. More than half the threads on here start out one way and take on a life of their own due to how it impacts each of us .. or how some could see it possibly playing out.

I guess if it's beneficial to some... But pronouncements and referendums seem counter-productive to me-- if you don't see the value in accessing the cleanest possible tracks, or the value in editing your own, why not move on to another thread? Or, if you're so gol-durn (see how I did that? did you see?) passionate about swearing (or not), then why not start your own thread about how great it is and how repressed folks are that just can't get with it? But leave the main thread for proper answers rather than a hi-jack situation. I just know that for me, it would be a drag to ask a simple question, and instead of an answer, to have to deal with 1,000 "But why do you want that???" responses, rather than just a simple and helpful answer (or complete silence). Momma said-- "If you can't say anything nice..."

Had to go back and see who started this thread/debate, then found out it was me LOL :) It is all good, Jim from Prime Cuts contacted me and let me know if I get stuff from them that is labelled clean cuts and still has words in it, drop him a note and they will work on it. Prime Cuts has been great to me and this is just another reason I would recommend them.

There has been some talk lately about how this place is sort of 'dying off'. Now, when there is a bit of an interesting discussion, Captain Stroppy Pants gets all upset and would prefer keeping all responses "simple and helpful (or complete silence)". You really should find something more important to get upset about. This is a forum...for DISCUSSION. I'm pretty sure the mods don't share your position on 'less is more'....when it comes to reasonable discussion. If you look at the thread, Nick WAS offering helpful information, regarding the original post. Steve pushed him on a comment and the discussion took a bit of a different turn....yet it was still germane to the original topic (cursing/language) and hardly a "hi-jack situation".

"If you can't say anything nice..." Indeed.

How did you know my nickname was "Captain Stroppy Pants?" Are you stalking me? (Or have you been watching too much of that "Help!" marathon on channel 59?)

>>>>DISCUSSION<<<<

Why are you yelling DISCUSSION?!?

>>>>If you look at the thread, Nick WAS offering helpful information, regarding the original post/yet it was still germane to the original topic<<<<

We obviously disagree on this most central of points. (And why are you yelling WAS?)

>>>>"If you can't say anything nice..." Indeed.<<<<

Indeed-- In...deed...

Hi im new to the board and just wanted to add my two cents, I agree that the profanity in this rap music whatever you would like to call it is just to much. I play for teens but not many and when i do every track is clean edit. I have had many party guest come over to me and say wow your version is cleaner then the radio. But most of the gigs i DJ are adults 30 and over.

Totally agree and welcome to the fray. BTW, I've got a clean version of "Get Low" by Lil John. My opinion, that track is almost not usable because of all the empty space there is in it. Of course, the guests are usually screaming the lyrics anyway. Pitiful.

Thank You, And i will agree with you on that Lil Jon track get low. To clean that song up it will take a lot of work. And by the way i have a very good clean version of that a radio edit. I sent the mp3 file to my buddy who works for one of the record labels and he cleaned it up.

Very cool. You'll find most of us have been at this a long time too .. and we all have a variety of ways of doing things. Pull up a chair, get comfortable .. and don't feed Rob (Jokerswild) after midnight.

Glad to "see" a new face on the board. Welcome. I'm one of the older DJ (in age) but mid-level in tech experience. I specialize in wedding receptions and many of the other events that we all do from time-to-time. I'm astounded at the rap/hip-hop music. When I look at theekly downloads of the R&B/Urban I can only find 3 or 4 that don't have WARNING of some degree. Yes, even the "clean" edits leave a bit to be desired. A few weeks ago I did a Sweet 16 for a Christian group of teenagers. Fortunately, the birthday girl gave me a list of the songs/artists she and her friends liked. Several came up from time to time asking for song requests. I told them that any song that had "Warning Content" would not be played. They understood where I was coming from immediately. Interesting occurrence at the party. Mother of the B-Day girl and another mother chaperone came up to me after the first slow song was played. Apparently, some of the couples were a little to close for their liking (the mothers') and told me to not play any more slow dance songs. Well, I had to be the bearer of bad news to several kids who subsequently came up later and requested a couple of songs that I knew were "slow" dance--told them that the "mothers" had spoken. Also, that they should have known to NOT get to close on the dance floor so early. (This was an outdoor party at the home of the birthday girl.) They were a bit put off, but I always abide by the client's wishes.

And, from time to time you will want to have some popcorn handy for some of the "extended" conversations (adversarial) and sometimes not all that friendly. We tolerate some things but others are taboo. You'll find out soon enough what I'm talking about.

Enjoy.
