I was a chaperone at a middle school dance last night, and my ears really hurt right now.

The DJ had powered 15"s on poles and up on a stage as well. As I was walking past them, I tried to see what brand they were. All I could see were the letters "GX". So that didn't sound like anything I knew, so when I got home I googled it, and found out that it was the GX Line of Gemini.

So, these were what the guy was using for 300+ kids, and he didn't have a sub, in a room that could have held 500+ kids.

Review: They put out a decent amount of bass, but they were as distorted as could be. It was just way too hard to listen to. Obviously the DJ didn't have the right tools for this job. At the back of the room it didn't sound too bad, but the closer you got to the speakers, the more the distortion became apparent. I was supposed to walk the entire room, but tended to stay in the back to preserve my ears.... but I don't think it helped.... Damn, my ears hurt.

Isn't it amazing how bad speakers can be overdriven and put out loads of distortion and never blow. You do the same thing to a top quality speaker and it is dead. They must have a voice coil clearance = to the grand canyon :)

Decent and distorted do not belong in the same sentence when referring to the sound output from a speaker. Like you Papa, i would have been distraught the whole night. I cannot stand distortion or blaring music. Give me the natural powerful sound.

Non of you know if it was the speakers fault or human error. A good speaker can distort if fed a bad signal. If the dj does not know anything about gain structure or have bad music files he will not have a good sounding rig. I have been to events with multi thousand dollar systems that sound bad because of improper setup.

Amen brother!!

Zinc, I agree, and I know part of it was from his mixer.... He was using the numark KMix.... I have the mix 2 and the distortion is high.... and they are basically the same cd mixer. But I can also tell you that if you put that mixer through my Bose or my JBL system, it would have sounded way better.

I do doubt anybody would really call a Gemini system "good".

Based on what Papa stated...the amount of people, size of room etc, it is no wonder it sounded distorted. This is because the equipment was grossly insufficient. There was not enough power to cover the needed space.

Something to consider...

As is the case with most "budget" speaker system brands, Gemini boxes are loaded with piezo horn drivers. Piezo drivers are notorious for harshness at higher power levels.

Not true in this case they have compression drivers.

Not defending Gemini but it it as good or bad as most Chinese built boxes out there.

If the ears hurt it might be he could have been in violation of health/safety regulations regarding sound level.
