... Is this standard for Netbooks?

I got a deal on an Augen E-Go netbook. I had just one use that I wanted to put it to:

I wanted to load my karaoke songbook and software into it and carry it to shows for easy searching....
This app takes around 50-60 Meg. The unit has plenty of memory for it, BUT:

It's locked. This was not in the specs as advertised or seen anywhere, but it IS in the user's manual. This unit will not accept any new apps- period.

This can't be normal, can it? If I could get to a DOS /Command prompt I could get around it, but none available.

Thoughts or answers?

I just picked up a new netbook last week and have added about 20 apps to it since I got it. I think it must be the one you got.

From a quick Google it looks like The Augen runs Windows CE, which is basically an OS for PDA's/smart phones as I understand it. Your pretty much stuck running what ever is on the phone. Here's a website I found with Windows CE software: http://www.pdagold.com/software/list.asp?p=1 I cannot tell you anything about the site though so download at your own risk.

Sorry you got hosed, Joe.

Actually, no hosing. The catalogue Co. that I bought it from agreed to take it back- after threatening to expose lack of disclosure in NJs's largest newspaper ( with whom I have an independant writers,s relationship). Anyway, all good.

The next question: Is the Acer version any better? Remember, all I want to do is keep my songbook- and KJ Pro software- on this thing....

Joe I have one of the ACER mini's as long as you can download the programs or put them on a stick you should be fine, there is no CD drive on them!

They use XP for OS!

I just bought a dell for my daughter I'm stll waiting delivery I'll let you know in a couple of days what it's like

Glad to hear that Joe! :) Lot's of times these companies try and dump these machines on Luddites like yourself :sqwink: and cite some assine return policy as the reason why you cannot return it.

I don't have any netbooks in my computer line-up. A friend of mine has a Dell with XP and it's decent. Rick has one that he always gloats about too. Just make sure any Netbook you buy is running Windows XP and not some Linux variant or Window CE and you should be set. As You can always Google the name and model number for reviews on build quality. It would also be best looking for 1GB or more of RAM so you have room to run your song book app and other things down the road. As Steve said a USB memory stick will be great accompaniment for the Netbook to put installers on as there is no CD drive.

If you going to be using this at gigs make sure it has a built in Kingston lock slot (most do, it's normally listed under detailed specs) this way you can tether it to your rig and don't have to worry about someone walking off with it. :)

I use an Acer netbook and run OTSAV dj on it. NO problems at all.

I would also recommend the ASUS eeepc. I bought the HE1000 for my wife, a 10 inch version, and she loves it. I've had OtsAV running on it as well, although it's a bit tight on the display being as it only displays 1024x600, instead of 1024x768. It does allow for window scroll though... that method drives me nuts personally. I wouldn't personally own anything smaller than 10" model.
