When you do DMX, a lot of the process is planning.
Map out how you would like the lighting to work before you start setting addresses, so you can decide if some fixtures should have the same address (so they act the same - like some or all of the uplights) or should be different, based on how you will use them.
Lights generally (except for older ones) have multiple ways of DMX control, so you need to decide how many of the channels you actually need. For example, some fixtures can be controlled by 3, 5, 11, or say 19 channels of DMX depending on whether you want simple RGB control or full control over every facet (that you need the instruction manuals for). It's important as not every controller (hardware or software) can address the entire 512 channels, so you need to know how many channels you wish to control PLUS how many total different device addresses you need BEFORE you start allocating addresses.
