EV ZXA1 overheating problems?

..... I just can't understand why EV designed them this way. A big mistake.
Bill, I'm gonna presume these systems were designed primarily for installs (and possibly stage wedge duty) in climate-controlled venues. I've seen EV active molded boxes installed in venues ~ not sure if they're the same model though.

I agree with Bill Smith. They are fine cabinets in their environment. Avoid using them outdoors when the temp is high. :)

My next speaker purchase will probably be the K-8s & the K-subs.
Are you going to use that at home in your studio. Kinda weak for Professional Gigs won't you say? Turn it up and it will sound like a Boom Box on steriods. Whats wrong with going with the K-12s?

What size speakers are in your Bose box that you use for professional gigs?
I will have you know that my Bose AWM does not take the place of speakers meant to do a particular job. I did not buy it to lighten my load and expect it to entertain a bunch of people. That is mainly used for small conferences, rented out at $150.00 per pop or used as background music in Office lobbies etc. I know its limitations. It is also used as a monitor for myself at certain events.

So these jobs you use it at aren't paying gigs? I'm just responding to your remark about 8" speackers at professional gigs.....So you use your "less that 8" speaker" at professional gigs or not? Yes or No?

Knucklehead, The Bose AWM is not a speaker. It is a music system. Go throw yer darts somewhere else.

You and Charlie Brown should get together and form a wishy-washy club. You could be president.
...and speaking of throwing darts..... (see your quote)...but then you'd know something about boom boxes....

Wow, If someone hires you for an outdoor gig, they must provide a tent or shade for you?...that's pretty impressive.
What happens if you get there & find otherwise?

Our contract states the same thing. If coverage is not provided, we will supply a tent and charge $75. Not only does it say that in the contract, I explain it to people when we are discussing an outdoor event. I had it happen last year where they said we'd be under a tent. When my DJ got there, they said there was no threat of rain since it was so sunny, so they moved his spot outside the tent. He called and asked me what he should do. I said they need to pay $75 and set up our tent. They paid. I live in Ohio. Rain is an issue, and so is the sun. The sun can be brutal on my computers and speakers. My electronic equipment simply will NOT be sitting out uncovered from rain or sun. While I've never had my equipment stop, I've heard it happen to others that use the same equipment. It's not just your brand. I believe it's a safe guard built in to good equipment to shut down when it gets too hot rather that just burn up components inside.

I did make a tent exception once this year for a short ceremony, i used a compact and put it under my table for sun coverage, so the amp portion was still not getting any direct sun.

Where are the speakers? In many cases, I am in the back corner, the speakers are places in 2 different areas, do you have small tents/umbrellas for them as well?

Like I said, I have the K12's. When I went looking for subs, I looked at the K Sub. I also asked all around for something that would suit me better. Alas, I have the 118P subs that compliment my K12's very well (and sound better than the K Sub IMO). The K Sub is (2) 12" drivers. The 118P is (1) 18" driver rated @ 700W.

I wound up buying the K-Subs. Since the EV SB2a does not have proper cooling features, and I have experienced problems with the ZXA1s, I could not invest money/risk it..... I went with the QSC K-sub.

I mostly DJ weddings (big thump is not needed) & big heavy subs are what I'm trying to get away from. (I presently have the big Mackie 1501 sub for big gigs where it may be needed)

But I'm looking to lighten my load & the ZXA1s work perfectly INDOORS for small receptions, they just need some extra bass. Hopefully the K-sub will be a good combination.

ben was offering the SB2A'a at $399.....I drive mine (w SB122's as well)... and no heat issues.

Don't know what you mean by "proper cooling" My RCF 310A's have no fans and they work fine. My FBT Maxx6A's have no fans either. Never had them overheat.

Most times, when doing outside events, all of the equipment stays under one tent. Speakers are generally close by. But yes, an umbrella would be an option if you needed to put one speaker a distance away.

One large outdoor event we did a few years ago, we needed to put 4 towers wirelessly. The client provided 4 pop up tents to provide coverage.

I would have thought that in the AZ heat, keeping things covered would be a given. I guess not.

umm Bill your gear in the past was not made in China right? Good luck with your new Chinese options.

I guess only time will tell. If I'm not happy you'll know it, because I tell it like it is.
I don't care you the manufacture is.
If it helps others to avoid something, or if I praise it, you'll know it's legit.

I've been doing outdoor ceremonies here for 17+ yrs. I never had a problem with any piece of equipment until I used the ZXA1.

As I mentioned, I believe recently some manufacturers started putting things inside to stop if the internal temperature gets too high. My assumption is they found this to be a leading cause of premature breakdown(which can cost them money for warranty claims).

I would suggest contacting the company to see if in fact there is such a device that would cause your unit to shut down when a certain temperature is reached. I don't know for sure that your's has one. It is an assumption on my part since it has shut down in direct sunlight. I know mine does, and people had the same question as you.

I'm pretty certain this has this, because that's what it does. It get's too hot, it shuts down until it cools off & then it's fine (until it gets too hot again)

I plan on using these speakers only inside or for cocktails (in the shade) I can't count on them for ceremonies. I would not recommend them to anyone that is looking for ceremony speakers.

They have great sound & are very nice for small stuff (inside)
