I bought 14 blizzard pucks used a few years ago to do uplighting but never sold it or uplit an entire room. I finally have a hot prospect that wants uplighting for her reception. I'll probably add a few other fixtures that are brighter and will help fill the room. Since she only wants one static color that will work. Anyway, I'm just a little excited and wanted to share!

Glad you're a little excited and hope all goes well. Good luck or should I say good skill with the wedding. When you truly know what you're doing it's not luck.

If you're in the market for used, I may be downsizing soon...toward retirement...and will be looking for a buyer, just saying.

I've been to this venue several times, but I'll probably go in earlier in the day to get the lights set up right.

OK. at age 62 I'm not sure how much longer I'll be doing this either.

@ Jas: "OK. at age 62 I'm not sure how much longer I'll be doing this either."

Talk about age...I just turned 70 in March. My goal was to do at least one event after I turned 70 years. This Saturday (5/16/15), wedding, outdoors, is my first gig at reaching that age. Hope I don't have sunstroke or heatstroke! LOL

Being brutally honest, retiring kills you. I've seen it with many people including my grandfather. I see my mother and father (Both in their 70's) keep busy running their school (Opened in 1966). My mom loves it and refuses to stop working, so she's always busy, planning, deciding and doing. I'm hoping this keeps them around for a very long time ;)

Congrats Twin Spin DJ.

My Dad is turning 71. He still deejays...2 - 3 gigs a week. He does not do weddings any more, but he does an American Legion, an Elks Lodge, and a Hand Dance Club every week. ...The Elks Lodge is one night a month...sometimes two. ...So most weeks are 2 gigs, but some are 3. He says he will keep deejaying till he no longer can do it, but he doesn't have any help lifting, setting up and loading out. So I hope he retires in the next 2 years for the sake of health. I commend you guys who reach 70 and still do DJ gigs, especially SOLO.

With that said...You are in the same boat as I am with up lighting. I bought blizzard wireless pucks 2.5 years ago. I have barely made my money back on them over having them out on 4 events.

Congrats @Jas on your first uplighting gig and Congrats Art @TwinSpinDJ on doing one over 70 both big achievements

Ricky I almost fell in the same trap. I thought about it a couple of years ago and after an informal market survey backed away from the idea. The venues here that are high end have their own and so do some decorators and the ones that aren't high end aren't willing to pay for them

I can't speak for your area but uplighting is what got me over the $1k hurdle. I book about 1/3 of my gigs with uplighting. After buying the cans, I had to give away 3-4 jobs in order to get some pics. As soon as I had those on the website, it was off to the races.

Around here alot want them but very few want to pay for them...The other problem is I'm colourblind it almost got me in trouble last fall when I lit a room with my quadpar as a favour

Well...solo is not for the weak body but young-at-heart. I'm still both. I've got to tell you, though, the day after is a B****. Dehydration is the biggest problem the evening when you go to bed...even if you have been drinking lots of water during the "outdoor" events (especially). Muscle cramps come in the wee hours of the morning. Back issues don't help.
I'm not kicking the bucket from actively DJ, but just slowing down.
Yesterday was hot and humid. I made it through the wedding ceremony and reception. Can't seem to stand that many hours anymore. But did load and unload without help! Take it slow.
The Evox system should help in speeding up load time and setup. My road case is 87 lbs. and I have to load it into the vehicle from the house on occasions. Most of the time it goes into the DJ trailer and on to Rock n Roller, so minimal carrying distance. But you still gotta lift the darn thing on to the table. LOL My road case is a special made unit. I'll discuss some other time what's in it.

Up-lighting has really been a money maker for me; 3 to 4 events a year and I charge handsomely for it. The thing that doesn't seem to be doing that well is Monogram projection (Neeva 100). I get maybe one or two a year, but I don't push it or up-sell because the extra time it takes to setup on light stand and get focused (I'm only solo).

Talk to you guys later. Thanks for the kind remarks about age. :

The reason why some people retire and then die off is because they just sit around doing nothing. Yes we all must go at sometime. The ones who last a good while after retiring are the ones that keep themselves busy with some kind of activity in their life. If it's just going to Bingo. They are at least doing that.

That's the point of my post.

It turns out the uplighting isn't needed as the venue already included a "lighting option" with their package. I doubt that this is uplighting supplied by the venue, but probably string lighting. I'll find out in October since I'm still getting the job as DJ/MC.
