Yup, I'm officially a trader. :sqerr: I've gone on and on about how great linux is and it is great but a lot things just don't work they way the should. I'm tried of having to borrow the laptop every time I want to access a java enabled site among other things.

The only downside is I have to run anti-virus which eats resources but I'll be able to use some of my favorite apps again. Like Mail washer is one of my favorites and a few old games I have on CD-ROM.

At any rate, the price for an OEM copy of XP home was right and it's sort of a late Christmas gift to myself. I really wanted to buy XP before that mess called Vista hits the market and I'm unable to buy XP.

After 8 months away from Windows, I'm not all that up on the lastest freeware apps. Any good ones I should try out?

Thanks,
Dan

Im surprised you're having java website problems! Java has never been a problem for me with Firefox or Mozilla. The only catch I found was that you have to manually enable linkage between the browser and java runtime.

FYI the machine I am writing from is dual boot with dual drives. I work almost exclusively from Linux and fall back to booting to Windows98SE when I need to work on Visitrax for music cataloging. My Think Pad is a refurb w/Windows2000Pro. I only use that for Visitrax in the field. As of this point I see no reason to switch to XP or even think of Vista.

Once I have time to learn more about Wine and Crossover Office, I will be using Visitrax on Linux. I have on Linux now, but can't get it to recognize CDROM for some reason. I'm sure it's in how I am mapping and/or aliasing the drive. I don't think I have the syntax/protocol correct for calling the drive.

Dan, what version of Linux and what kernel were you using? Java is NO reason to switch back to Windows... if anything, it runs WORSE on Windoze.

I'm running the latest Ubuntu (6.10) kernel 2.6.17. To be sure I'm going to keep a partition for Ubuntu mainly to experiment with. It isn't just Java. For instance ever since the latest kernel push, I cannot burn audio CD's, it'll convert all the files start the burn then spit out some error. It worked all the time before, now I keep wasting CDs. I don't know why I have all the libraries I need installed. When I make an audio CD with the exact same files on Windows it burns perfectly.

As much as I dislike Windows the truth is when properly managed it just works.
