How do you organize your DJ Song Library?

Or you gotta love the Limewire/Torrent mislabeled files where they swear it's the right artist/song name yorofl:

In Serato, I can type in any genre and it will bring up all the songs in that genre, LOL so easy: r o c k 4 letters, 1/2 second.......... voila! Any way I want I can search, the more I enter, the tighter the search. Easy and fast. Did I mention fast?

I park requests and other on-the fly stuff in the "prepare" screen, and leave it up on my monitor. Real easy to drag songs on the decks .

Best,

Paul

Nowadays guests come up and shove a smartphone in your face and ask "Got this?"

........and then I had 'em a request slip and a pen.............on the request slips it says: "Please write legibly". No one stuffs anything in my face. That's just downright rude.

Best,

Paul

Nowadays guests come up and shove a smartphone in your face and ask "Got this?"

Or ask if you can hook their phone into your gear......

If I don't have it and depending on how they ask.....I either tell them I wll have to listen to the file first.....

Or if they're rude I tell them...Yeah I could hook that into my board, but I'm not going to....have any other requests......

Sometimes it's is soooooooo hard not to be a smartass.....

Since I went digital after being cd-based for many years, it helped me to create folders that simulated my cd setup. This made my transition much more smooth because I felt like I was more organized and the digital listing was much like I had my cd cases setup.

So, as I was ripping my cd music, I would create folders that meant something to me: Disco, Classic Rock, Oldies but Goodies, etc....

After that, I then took it further and created 'Best of' type folders, example being; Best of Disco, Best of Classic Rock, Best of Oldies but Goodies. These folders included music that was successful in the past as good party songs.

I also have went back and cleaned up alot of my tagging info and utilize the 'Genre' feature at times as well.

Since the majority of your tags - assuming you've ripped them paying special attention to spelling and such - won't ever change - like artist, album title and song title - the only part that may change on a whim is the genre.

That's why my folders are all set up by genre as it makes it a snap to change the genre as desired.

For example, I separated my 70s Dance folder into two - 70s Dance and 70s Soul. It was the new way I wanted to categorize them and it was very easy to do.

Here is a bit more detailed list as to how i organize my Music library in conjunction with my DJ software Traktor. The attachment is a Word Document with Screen Shots.

Just organize your music YOUR own way there is NOT one set way of doing it

if you dont like the real TRUTH then dont be a Dj

oh if no one else like it then eat my shorts!

have a nice day

oh what a shame - someone doesnt like being told the truth do you handy andy randy!

Here it is that all the time I thought you folks were putting people first. I bring people behind my Booth all the time and they love it. I sometimes will pick out a person and have them come up and play a set. They go ape over that. Would you ever make an announcement like this?...... "Put $5.00 in the Bartender's Tip Jar and I will let you play a 3 song set." They fork over the $$, they come up, I show them what to do and they are elated. The Bartender is happy, the Customer can't believe the DJ has allowed them to touch his gear and the customer's friends are applauding.

I don't know about ya'll but I have fun at my gigs. Yeah, this may not go over well at a Wedding but I still have people coming up behind my booth, especially the pretty redheads! :triwink:
TRy asking the bartender to let you go behind the bar and make your own drink or your friends and family their drinks. See how that works out for them. I make every effort to help accommodate any request but some people have n clue and looking through your list is a waste of time and usually ends up with a song that crashes the party. If they are indecisive enough to come up with no title or artist in mind they will most often sit there looking for hours or they will pick the first song which they relate to which wont likely be a song even they consider dancing to.

How does this fit the topic of the thread? My library is maneuverable by me my way my guests dont need to know the code nor any other DJ. It is like software etc whatever method works best for you is the right way for YOU!! Do it your way I wont argue with you on that. Let me do it my way. Sure I like new ideas and will try them if it seems even remotely feasible. "HAVE IT YOUR WAY".
