So how would a Zune vs iDevice handle this listing? B.o.B - Nothin' On You (feat. Bruno Mars). Almost everyone attributes this song to Bruno Mars. Could you find it on both units if searching by Bruno Mars?

I have that song file as "N.O.B. - Nothin' On You". The tag I have shows artist as "B.O.B." and contributing artist as "B.O.B. ft Bruno Mars". So any DJ program (RockIt) could and would find that song in a search by the title. Same program...search by either artist and both would be found.

The Zune option could show "B.O.B. ft Bruno Mars separatly along with all songs by B.O.B. OR just B.O.B.

But it's easier to have just B.O.B. show so if I wanted to hear ALL songs by B.O.B., that song with Bruno Mars would be included.

If I had ALL the artists showing in the artist listing in either device, if I wanted to hear ALL songs by B.O.B., I'd have to somehow choose ALL the B.O.B. artists showing - B.O.B., B.O.B. ft Bruno Mars, B.O.B. ft or and with any other artist....

It's just my OCD desire to have it easier for me...that's all.

I think you read that wrong - I never said that 'you' have a problem with Apple, iTunes or the iPod either - I said the problem as I see it (and as I read it) is a MS problem. All the other devices work similar to each other, except the Zune. Also, 'self induced' meaning MS created its own problem.

As for you - all I was trying to say is that I think you're used to the way the Zune ran - and that as for song order, I think you would be incurring the same difficulties regardless of the platform you went to - because all the other ones (to include iDevices) seem to be pretty similar.

I apologize. I did read you incorrectly.

And I don't think there is an MS problem. I really liked having that option with the Zune program.

I'm getting used to the I Pod, and I need to work on my wheel scrolling skills!

Same here ... but the iPod Classic holds a lot more files for a reasonable cost. I still have a 30Gb version I used until I got a 32Gb iPhone 1.5 years ago.

Hey, if I could have put a new and bigger drive in my Zune, I wouldn't have hinted at a need for an I Pod classic.

I would have stayed pat.

Yea .. but you'd still have a Zune ...

I have the 160GB iPod classic.I mainly use it when I travel - hook it up to the car and let it roll.

Aside from walks, hooked up to my Polk Audio sound bar in house or in the gym, that's pretty much how I use mine as I have a little more than an hour commute each way - many times double that on a Friday ride home.

But I'd like to be able to choose an artist or an album...hence the wheel scroll practice I need.

Considering what you use it for, sounds like a playlist is what you need.

:)

Drag your songs to the playlist .. and your done.

The scroll is tough .. I think I will live with the smaller capacities and the touch screens. On my phone I have 32Gb, which is a lot of music. My iPad (a second gener) only has 16Gb, which isn't enough when I do small neighborhood events with it (I usually use the Traktor app I bought). A newer one is in the cards with maybe 64Gb, which should be enough for most things.

My iPod is 160GB and its got lots of crap on it - great for trips - plug it in and let it rock.

The iPad2 is 64GB - and I use it mostly as a tablet - taking notes, etc. Alot easier to use than the scroll wheel too - but it's alot bigger than the iPod - not as easy to store and plug in to the car.

I'm having a new (old) problem.

Since I'm not a big fan of rap music, I decided to delete all the rap I had from three separate folders - 90s Urban, 2000s Urban and 2010s Urban. I deleted the songs from the library but did not delete (or move) the actual files.

Instead I copied all the rap tracks I wanted to have on the device into one new folder and made them all one new genre - "Urban".

I than did the "add folder to library" AND then "add files to library" function.

In both cases, it did add the tracks to the library but it also created separate folders for each artist.

I did not change any preferences and I added a few other tracks from different genre folders and they went into the library fine and did not create new artist folders.

So it's this one new genre folder that's making all these new artist folders.

Any idea why?

If I'm understanding this properly:

Inside of iTunes, you deleted these entries from the index.

Outside of iTunes, you copied all these songs into a central new folder called something like Urban and renamed the genre for all of them to 'Urban'. Then you added them back into the library.

The part I'm not getting is that when you add them back into iTunes, it doesn't create folders - it just becomes another entry in the index. iTunes has no way to create folders. Sorting them by 'date added' would show them as the recently being added.

The new songs with the new genre in the new folder did import into the library just fine.

The only problem is that this one new folder - unlike ALL the other music folders - created new artist folders for each artist in this new genre folder.

And I have that preference spot checked where you can opt out of having I Tunes create their own system of music files...again...it's just this ONE folder....really weird.

I'm thinking that even though the music isn't imported, iTunes might store album art or other data in that directory in the future .. therefore it gets created on import. I never looked (though on mine iTunes manages the songs since I use it to rip all my CDs).

Almost sounds like you had a tagging issue - could this have happened when you retagged them as Genre 'Urban'? iTunes itself doesn't create folders external to iTunes, especially if it's not copying the files to the media folder .. and especially not during an import / add to library. Again, the index is a flat file - it doesn't store anything except a catalog of what's where.

Looking at my iTunes right now, under Advanced, there are 2 things that I do not 'check' (actually on this page, only 1 thing is 'checked' - Enable full keyboard navigation). Things to note on this page:

iTunes Media Folder location - is this the same path as where your music is? This could be problematic if it is. Mine is not. Mine says C:\...\...\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media. I have nothing in that location.

Keep iTunes Media folder organized (places files into album and artist folders, and names the file based on the disc number, track number and the song title) is not checked - this sounds something like what you describe - but this would ONLY work if the path in the iTunes Media Folder location (specified above) was the same as where your music is.

Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library is not checked.

Having said that, when I buy something off of iTunes, it does place them into artist / album folders. I then use a tag editor to remove all the info I don't want, bpm scan, etc and manually move it to its new home in my library - after that, I go to iTunes and do an Add To Library.

I'm going to move all three of the "no longer in the library" urban music files to a folder outside of anything connected to I Tunes, re-import that one new urban folder and see of that solves it.

Thanks again for the help guys.
