I got 2 lenses with it. 18-55mm and 55-300.

will the 18-55mm do what the 50mm can do? I seriously don't know ANYTHING about this and have a ton to learn.

The 18-55 (or 55-300) at 55mm and the 55 prime will cover the same thing. The difference is at 55mm, the 18-55mm is at a maximum aperture of 5.6, the 55-300 is at a max. aperture of 4.5 and the 50 prime is at 1.8. Aperture is a measure of how much light is able to be let in by the lens and the smaller the number, the more light. The 55 prime lens will let in almost 5x as much light as the others which will allow it to work fairly well indoors WITHOUT a flash, getting some nice candids.

Scott: Congratulations on your new Nikon. Perhaps a look here:

This will help you get a quick grasp of what goes with this camera, Ken is a bit controversial in the photo world, however I have used his advice and initial settings on my cameras as a baseline to get going in the past. I hope this helps!

Best,

Paul

I'm with you. I just bought a Canon T3i for my birthday. I got a lot to learn too. I'm used to a simple point and shoot. LOL.

Scott, I also just bought a new Canon Rebel XS a week ago, and am new at the whole DSLR thing myself. I did find a site that has pretty reasonable prices on lenses and accessories online. I have already ordered a 75-300 lens for mine, and other accessories for mine. I also bought an external flash, which has really helped too. The flash I bought is a Bower SFD926, which is also for all makes of DSLR cameras. Mine is the SFD926C, and yours would be the SFD926N. Here is the site. Check it out.

Yes, sorry, I picked that one as an example .. you will need the AF-S version on the 3000/5000 series.
