I put a DVD in to install some software in my D drive. I don't have autoplay running so I went to My Computer to look at the D drive and install. After about 15 seconds "Not Responding" message came up, and in fact, "D" showed nothing in the drive. I restarted the computer... same thing happened.

So I put a blank CD in "D" and burned a CD on "D" by using WMP. And it worked just fine.

So then I tried to install the program again and I had the exact same issues.

Any thoughts?

Did you forget to pay homage to the computer gods again..... you know you have to sacrafice a beer at least once a month to appease the great goddess PC....

...or get an exorcist.:sqlaugh:

Papa, if the computer freezes up when inserting a CD, it's because it's trying to read a faulty sector. Disk is bad. There are recovery programs for CDs... but your disk is either bad OR there's a dirty spot in it!

Now you know why I can't give up DJing with CDs. :sqerr:

You have it backwards kid -- it would appear the computer is working fine, but the disc is bad... :sqwink:

Try cleaning it as Homer mentioned, or get a replacement disc...

I don't think the disc is bad as I tried 2 different discs...

I thought you burned a disc in there, and it worked fine... :sqconfused:

Try putting in a couple data CDs and see if they work, also a couple off the shelf music CDs.

BTW, what program are you trying to install...?

I did burn a CD.... I tried to install a brand new copy of Pinnacle Studio. I also tried to install a game, and it didn't see that, either.... But as of 10 minutes ago, I tried ANOTHER game, and it DID see that, so I am going to try PInnacle again.

Now Chuck, are you using the CD drawer to hold your soda can again?

Seriously,

Have you looked to see if your drivers are up-to-date?
Just a thought....

No, but it made my CDs just fine, and I used it 2 days ago to install a program from DVD....

Is it a Dell machine?

Nope... I have determined that it is, in fact a bad disc, even though it is brand new.... None of my 4 computers can see it, but they can all see everything else.... Kudos to those who said it was a bad disc.

I bought it from BH Photo.... I hope this isn't a PITA to get fixed.

Papa is it a commercially made cd/dvd ?

if it is and doesnt work then you can take it back and ask for them to replace it (for free)
or they have to give you your money back...

Yeah, I know, but this is one time I wish I had used a real store, not online.

BHPhoto has always been good to me -- just don't try to get anything on a Saturday, they're highly orthodox jews, and shut down everything on Saturdays, even their ordering. They work on Sundays though :)

Not sure what their policy on sealed software is though -- they may direct you to the manu for a replacement disc. You also might be able to download the software from Pinnacle, while you wait for a replacement...

Edit: Just noted on their site, that this weekend is a holiday for them -- they're closed today as well. Here's their schedule:

So whats the software you was trying to install again?

let me know I may be able to show you a replacement to download
