Last night, we had a 13 year birthday party at a country club. I was my son's assistant for the evening. He setup everything, handled DJ/MC duties, and I just enjoyed hanging out with him. He did a fantastic job, although his nerves almost got the better of him at the front. Dude handled those kids like a pro. Attaboy Matt. This is one proud papa.

He was supposed to be nervous his time doing an event. Glad to hear he got over that and things went well. The pictures look great! Tell him for me way to go!

Did you play "supervisor" and hover over him....questioning his every move....
or did you just sit back and let the pieces fall where they may?

Passive. I let him set everything up. He forgot to plug the power cords into the speakers, so I did mention it, but only after letting him sweat for a minute or so. During the night, I walked around taking pics and would sometimes come over to a 2nd PC that I setup for the slideshow. Every now and then I'd walk over there where he was and reassure him that "this is exactly how it usually goes" and "You're doing a great job." Like any of us, he kept critiquing himself all the way home on how he could have done better, how he should have spent more time in preparation, etc. He's going to do just fine.

Looks about right. Just read facebook while sitting behind the DJ Table, and play music off a preset playlist! That is so PRO!

Readl DJs make it look easy. He is doing that on Gig #1! :D

Glad to hear it was a good gig!

The first picture - you need to look closely - 6 smart phones!
Second picture - he, as well as the girls in front of him, are probably doing Facebook, maybe to each other!!
Brave New World!!!
In my day, we had to walk 20 miles to school through the snow!!!!

Passive doesn't require power cords into the speakers - is this the new fangled passive? Did you mean signal cords?
Passive was the answer to "hovering" ... Power cords was a separate issue.

That says it all right there.
He's got enough of an ego to make a good DJ/MC....
but not too much that he can't see his own shortcomings.
Hell, after 30+ years, I am still my worst critic.

I realize that the sitting/standing argument while DJ'ing is often a personal preference. However, certainly as a young man learning the business, I think he would be better served with a higher podium that forces him to stand up - which just might be the case when he is standing behind the mixer case. Anyway, he needs a laptop stand so he can Facebook while vertical. :djsmug:

He is certainly fortunate having a father who can help him with the "technical" side of the things.

I'll be getting into nuances and fine tuning as time goes on. On this first one, he was absolutely scared shatless. About 20 minutes before starting I actually wondered if he was going to fold up but I just kept reassuring him that it would be okay and that he could do this. I want to ease him into this world and make sure I'm not pounding too many details at him at once.

...Your son was lucky to have you by his side at his first one.
I'm glad my father wasn't by my side at my first gig... of course he's been dead for over 30 years, so he would have been no help at all.[emoji1]... People woulda been sayin' the DJ stinks, and I would have to explain; no, it's my dead father.[emoji1]
