I have a wedding that I just booked that is looking for some TexMex style music:

Any ideas other than Selina?

Definite no no's are Reggaeton, salsa, marenge (sp).... these are Mexicano's from Texas is how they describe themselves... She did say she'd burn me a CD of their favorites but any help from you folks would be greatly appreciated...

The wedding isn't until the end of June so I have time to gather up the necessary music....

The event wont be all Texmex style so I'd just need enough to run a few sets and maybe an extended set... other music will be a variety of hip-hop, Urban, Rock, country and country/western.....

Younger crowd 18-35 on average... with the only a few folks over that in the 40-55 age range....

Here's the funny thing about this one... the venue that they are or rather want to rent is only charging a $300.00 deposit with $300. due the night of the event... and if they leave the venue as they found it they get their $300 back....

So, if that happens I'm $224.00 more than the venue....

Hey Rob,

Not my best genre. But have you tried looking on Amazon? Type in something like "Tejano" or "TexMex" and see what it renders. Or look on Ebay for a collection.

Here's another idea. I was trying to learn Spanish a couple years ago. I got into a lot of Latin culture and one of the things I did was listen to Latino radio stations on the Internet. You might find a play list if you look up a station that serves your specific clientele.

Another idea...During that time I was on a website downloading music from up and coming bands (free downloads). Not sure, but I think it was MP3.com. Look there and see if they have free Latin downloads of the TM/Tejano variety. The music may not be well-known though, since, as I understood it, the artists were up-and-comers. But I found a lot of good Latin music there.

Still can't speak Spanish though!

Thanks RaskyKat... I'll check on that.

For the time being I thought there were some Latin DJ's on this board.... figured they might know what works well together.... really I'm looking for some sort of playlist that mixes well since chances are I won't know the songs or their meanings.... I'd hate to get a breaking up song for a wedding... know what I mean?

Rob...This Might Help

PM DeeJay Rig or check out some of his post/threads here.

He has a ton of knowledge and is a good guy. :)

I will checkout his posts I know he did a rather lenghthy one about top hits for 2007 but as it was mostly in spanish I didn't understand a word of it...

What I need is very specific.... and that's in the TexMex style... I will give him a jingle via PM though to see if I can get him to chime in here...

Thanks

Rob,
Did you look in the music forum?

This is what I am going to suggest, you have already told them that you are not familiar with their music, ask them to supply some (more then a cd), or give you some names of some artists.

I just had a wedding this past weekend their family originates from Puerto Rico. They knew that I didn't have a large selection of Spanish music but they wanted a DJ that played a mostly English music with some Spanish. So they brought me their Cd's a couple days before. They also gave me some names of some artists which made it much easier.

Just a suggestion, worked for me. By the way they were a freaking blast! Really fun people one of those weddings where "you can play no wrong", no matter what they are dancing, Love those.

Actually that is precisely what I asked of them....

I said if you make me a CD of 10-14 of your top favorites then fill me in with a list of other possible artists and songs to look for I'd be able to create a great playlist off of that...

Beer in mind here that this is not an all TexMex event... they just want enough to sprinkle in some flavor for those few guests from that side of the family.

BTW I spelled bear wrong on purpose.... hehehe

This is truely going to be a very diverse group musically speaking they are all over the map.... from TexMex to Heavy Rock Christian music, country, rock, 80s, hip-hop... you name it there's an interest in the stlye....

It's the latin that's specifically limited to the texmex style....

Rob:

Another thought or two or three....I had was, take every track of Latin music that you have no matter what the style. We did a Latin reception (Bride's family was from South America and Miami) and we made sure that we had music from their homeland and tons of other stuff (I know that I listed the cds and the list is probably in the archives) from all different Latin countries. It can't hurt to have a variety, the audience might surprise you.

Here's the link to the thread and there's a PDF file to check out if you're interested.

What helped out was that one of the Bride's brothers would come up to the DJ table every so often and take a look at our selections and tell us to "play these"....and his recommendations were dead on.

If you don't have a lot of newer Latin music, try checking out the "Now That's Latin Music" series that are out there as they have a wide variety.

Oh and one thing, be prepared to have fun as these people will dance and party unlike their "gringo" counterparts.

Good Luck!

That was my impression at the meeting.... the bride herself told me that her friends like to party.... and she's was speaking for the "Gringo" side...

Here's an email I sent her to inquire about the way she wanted her DJ to dress I titled the message "Dress The DJ"

One thing I forgot to go over with you is how you'd like me to be dressed for your event...

1. Formal - Tuxedo

2. Semi-Formal - Dress Pants, Tuxedo Shirt, Bow Tie, and Vest

3. Business Wear - Shirt/Tie, dress pants

4. Casual Business - Polo Shirt, dress pants

Your pick for dress the DJ....

The Reply was... Number 4 would be fine but whatever is more comfortable...

This reception is tentatively scheduled for the D.A.V. or (Disabled American Venterans) similar to a VFW... this one is newer, only about 10-15 years old....

Rob, I may be out in space with this but I'll give it a try.

When I think of TexMex or Americanized Tejano I think of Zydeco (the Mavericks) and Jimmy Buffet/Alan Jackson and He Drinks Tequila (Sammy Kershaw). Or older Marty Robbins El Paso.

Some Zydeco has a heavy Spanish influence with Flaco Jimenez on the accordion. :)

Thoughts?

LOL the "gringos" may like to party, but the Latins will dance all night! :)

Hi,

Here are some artists I'd reccommend. Tap into their "greatest" hits and you'll find a ton of information and bring at least one of their tracks, of these "classics" of the Tejano Sound.

Flaco Jimenez
Freddy Fender
Intocable
Johnny Rodriguez
Little Joe y la familia
Los Caimanes
Los Lobos
