Here's the situation. I am a former radio DJ, been out of it for about 15 years. I've always said if the right situation came along I would jump on it. Well, I think that day has come.

We have a radio station here that just changed format and air staff. The format is "90s and More"! Playing the Hits from the late 80s, all 90s and the earl 2000s...Perfect for me...The ft air staff is all set, I really want to get in on a pt level and work my way up.

I sent the PD my "stuff" - 2-3 minutes aircheck, resume and cover letter. I did follow up once via his email and Facebook. He did respond and said let's keep in touch...

How often should I "Keep in touch"? Without being a pita. I just feel this station is perfect for me. I am not leaving the Mobile DJ biz, but I do want to get back in radio.

Thoughts?

I've been in radio myself and looking to get back into it part time.
In my opinion I would say maybe once every other week just touch base and offer to do some board op work on a sister station. I would recommend rubbing elbows with the other air staff. Ask the PD about coming up to sit in for an hour or so with other air staff. You may have to offer an hour of your time for free but it could pay off in the end.

At least this way you can see if you feel comfortable with the staff and you are showing the PD you are interested.

Radio has become the who you know and who you brown nose corporation. You have to sell yourself and your soul to get in anymore.

Good luck!

Timmy got bitten by the Radio bug :triwink:

I went back to radio last April on a part time basis and I pretty much work full time now.

You should contact him at least every couple of weeks. From my experience things tend to move slow and as summer approaches pick up really quick and when it's time you want to be the guy he remembers.

If you have to use FB or email but if you can in person or by phone are better

As a PD I will give you my opinion. Follow up with an e-mail once per week. That will show him/her that you want it yet it's not so much where he/she will feel like you are stalking them. I actually appreciate when folks follow up with me because honestly sometimes I just forget. If your stuff is good he'll find a place for you. Best of luck

Hey MIKE...

Would you mind if I sent you my stuff for critique? I'll send you exactly what I sent to him...I'll need your email asddress...

Thanks for your 2 cents and everyone who is responding!

Write your resume on a piece of cardboard, put on a cammy jacket and stand at the local intersection. You'll be hired in a week.

Oh Yeah Hank
like that would EVER happen
(sheesh)

Mike Merlin has it.
about once a week is great
you may wanna add a phone call now and then

in a time when most stations are cutting back on staff,
you cannot be the least bit SHY about it

or become a member of the Palin family. No experience needed for a PHOENIX Clear Channel station (KMXP), only if your name ends in Palin.

IMO, I prefer to do the mobile scene. I gotta have the faces. I don't think I'd be happy having to sit in a booth talking to an inanimate microphone all day long. I applaud those of you that do though because I love my radio!

I have done radio for like 7 years in past, always been a mobile though, something about on the radio is cool , but when u mobile and get the party rocking nothing like it, but go great hand in hand and each promotes the other

I'd love to try sometime but I love being mobile. I've been "on the air" before but not like the radio dj's are.
