Hey there,
Kirby recommended a Nikon D40.

I have a chance to buy a Nikon D70.
Anything wrong, worse, or better with that?

From what I can tell, pretty solid. I can get the body and the factory lens for around $300.00

thanks for any help on what I should get next for it if I decide to purchase.

All good suggestions. Read the reviews and decide what you need and what you don't need in a camera within your price range.

Canon, Sony, Fuji, Nikon are all good choices. We happen to use Nikon as Coreen has been using Nikon equipment since day one (and that was a long, long time ago!):sqwink:

FYI, we just purchased another Nikon D80 with a 18-135 mm lens to add to our growing arsenal of cameras.

A few things I looked at...

before I bought this one

What will you be using it for? Do you plan on using it as a personal camera or for business purposes?

What is your price range? As with most things the more you pay the more you get. Buy the best you can afford that suits your needs

How much camera do you need? Is a point and click going to suit you or are you a little more advanced

In my case I looked very seriously at the D80. I toyed with the idea for close to a year. What made me change my mind was I couldn't justify spending all that money on a camera to shoot what I was shooting. To put it simple it was alot more camera than I needed

If you have experience with SLR pro cameras the Nikon is the best you can buy in my opinion if not I would look elsewhere

THanks Jeff. I'm jealous of Kevin's event photos. I'm considering send out cards as a sole avenue for advertising outside of my website to reinforce my WOM clients for future gigs.

What I'm after is a camera that will take pro photos and have a flash that I can actually adjust. I also have 4 kids at home and would like to experiment taking photos of them.

I'm also an ebay junkie.

I now have a P and S Fugi S700. Its a large body, but not SLR. It does good but just like any other PandS, it sucks in poor light and the flash is always harsh. Great camera, but its time to move up and get a little more serious about gig pictures. When I show clients pics of gigs, I don't want them to look harsh. Photographers at gigs rarely respond to money when I offer....and of course they are there for BG....not me. So no big deal.

Yes, SLR will be a learning curve, but worth the investment.
Yes, I like the idea of Nikon as well, but I'm open.
Yes, I do have a budget of around $700.00 in the months ahead, not now, and I do want a lens and flash. I'm well within budget on many ebay auctions for D40 through D70.

Why not check out Ritz Camera online or locally... the D40 is down to $500 with the 18-55 lens. You will have service after the sale and if you need help in working it.. the associates will be willing to help you with any questions you have. Chances of getting that with an ebay purchase are slim.

If you don't have a Ritz close by check into any local camera shop. It's their business, it's what they do.. cameras.. they can fix you up with the right camera for the job you want to do..

( Please...Be careful where you purchase online... we recently had a customer come in looking for a replacement for her Nikon D200. She bought it online a couple years ago and started having problems with it. She took it for repair but no one would touch it.. seems she bought a "gray" market camera...( which translates into possibly stolen..) She wondered why the manual was a photo copy.)

Also.. be sure to check what your getting.. A few people have purchased cameras described as "body only" and thats all they get.. the body.. no battery, no charger, no cables, nothing...

And always made sure you are getting a USA warranty.. other wise you may have to send your camera to the Philippines or China for a repair.

Depending on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend the OLYMPUS E510 maybe something that might interest you. My wife bought this for me (to keep me out of her cameras) and hoestly it will do just about anything I am capable of doing. She bought a remote flash unit for this camera (it fires when the small flash on the camera does) works well for pictures of gigs or family (if I can ever remember to take it with me)

I'm jealous...

I was looking at the Olympus when it came out... now I'm kinda likin' the Sony A350....

Still can't afford it... but it sure is nice to play with at work... :)

Sorry I'm so late on this . . .

I'd stear clear of a Nikon D70 . . .

They are old enough that they are starting to wear out and people are dumping them, which is why you are finding good prices on fleaBay!

I've been seeing a lot of them come in for major repairs lately.

There are lots of brand new DSLR cameras in the $500 price range nowdays . . . I wouldn't mess around with used gear!

I have an Olympus E-510, Pentax *ist DS and Pentax K10D DSLR's . . .

Welcome back Doc

Not knowing anything about Cameras, my daughter (sophomore in college) was looking at a Nikon D40. Any thoughts? She needs a startup camera at a decent price, $500 - $700 would be nice. For me it's like reading Japanese.

You have the wrong side of the manual Ron urn it over :sqwink:

Oh great, now it's in Spanish. Does this mean the government is going to give it to me for free?

No . . . but they'll probably give you some surplus cheese! :sqlaugh:

The D40 is a nice little camera and is pretty easy to use.

The main drawback to it (and the D60) is that it won't auto focus with all of Nikon's AF lenses.

Only the Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) and Tamron BIM (Built In Motor) lenses that have the focus motor in the lens.

You can use the AF-G and AF-D lenses on it, but will have to focus manually.

It also lacks some advanced features and controls that other DSLR's have.

But the D40 is a great camera to get as a first DSLR.

I personally have two Pentax and one Olympus DSLR's.

I just like to be different . . .
