School & Teen Events Props & How Do You Use Them???

Last night I tried something new. The lady wanted interactivity for her grand-daughters birthday party. I decided to get creative and buy blow up microphones and blow up instruments (guitars and bugles)

I kinda just walked out there and handed them over. And asked for them to be returned at the end of the evening. I received all instruments and all but 2 microphones of the 4 purchased.

---

How do you handle your props, and how do you hand them out. . . Do you say anything, or just "who wants a prop"

Trying to implement this better for future parties.

They are left behind at all parties. I charge for the package and don't expect them to be returned. What ever I pay for them I generally charge 2.5 times my cost just for the aggervation of having to buy them and remember to bring them.

How to I had them out?

Sometimes I put one kid in charge of that thing like inflatables sometimes I just strt throwing them into the crowd. Sometimes i set them in front of my setup and let them figure it out. It depends on the party type and size. I also sometimes just give them to the person that booked the party and let them deal with it.

We set the props out for whatever dance that we're using them for and get them back right after the dance.

YMCA- the usual hat props
OLD Time Rock N Roll - Dark Glasses and Blow up Saxaphones
Blow up guitars for any rock songs
Hot, Hot Hot - Maracas, tambourines, cabana hats
The Train - My wife leads wearing a train engineer hat with her name on it
Car Wash - Afro Wigs and Glasses

I use feather boas, real maracas and tambourines for my probs. I invest serious $$ in them. I do loose some on occasion, but I try to remember to say the following. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are setting out some dance floor accessories, so please help yourself and enjoy them. But, please leave them behind when you leave the dance floor so others may enjoy them too."

I still have to replenish on occasion. I just charge enough to consider it a part of the cost of doing business.

I order all my props in bulk, and I have no desire to deflate them at the end of the night so I tell people to take them and if they don't they get thrown away. I consider this a cost of doing business.

I had the same set up YMCA hats for almost 10 years +. They were real hats. The only ones I replaced were the Indian. The police hat was one of my fire department dress hats. We had the same style. The construction hat I bought at a yard sale. It was real. And I had a few decent cowboy hats. The leather guy hat I bought at iParty and it was good quality. I never lost any of them.

I also use chicken hats, about 3 doz. I get those back as well and reuse them. Although maybe I shouldn't with so many kids with head lice. When I use to visit the schools kids would always want to try on my helmet. After realizing the lice thing we would bring an extra or just use one of the rookies.

Dan,
Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm just curious.

Can I assume you are primarily a wedding DJ?

I put 'em on my boat.... Sorry, I'll go back to my corner now...:sqcool::sqwink:

Just an idea but check your local dollar store. The ones around here in chicago actually have blow up guitars and such kind of things. very cheep and you wont feel bad about loosing them!

Also when i was in high school one of our DJ's threw a few beach balls in the crowd to get us "jumping" ;)

How much do they cost from the dollar store?

funny you should mention that, me and one of my cousins a while back went to the dollar store, we had about 10 items or so, took out the first one and asked the clerk "how much is this because nothing has prices" (we knew it was only a buck but thought it would be funny) she said its a dollar, than we said the same thing for the next item and she said everything in the store is a dollar, so than my cousin said oh wow thats a good price and handed her a dollar and me and her were cracking up laughing so hard... he was actualy able to keep a straight face so it made it that much better.
