LOL... Best Buy wants $134.99 for "Deluxe" 10' HDMI cables..... trust me, the ones from monoprice work just work just fine.

They must market them with all the fixins? Lettuce, Mayo, Tomato? Sorry, poor attempt at humor! I can't imagine why a cable would be THAT much better! I believe I will be going with the 6 footers you mentioned!

:sqlaugh: It's for people who think more $$$ means better. Sorta like all them $2000 DJs. :sqwink:

But seriously, back to the topic. This is something that I am currently working on, and I will share my experiences along the way. We hope to have this part of the business up and going come the first of the year.........

I have seen this done in a couple of bars and heard about it happening at a few others. My 19 year old brother walks into the bar he goes to and they just hand him the nightly prize. It can be good fun if done right and watch the young kids go, some of these kids are crazy good. Most middle aged men don't fare so well.

qdupsoundz,

What are you planning to charge a bar for a Rock Band event?

Ruben, I can't remember if we have chatted before, so I shall introduce myself: Name's Heath, part-time DJ here....... ok that being said:

That is the question that we have in our minds as we are planning this, if we charge too much, the bars will just want to buy the game system themselves, and we want to charge enough to make it worth our while doing it and get paid back for our investment.

I am sure in your market prices vary, but I am thinking of $300 per standard "open stage" event. More of course if it's an all day tournament of bands..... The one thing I will remind bars is that I will be bringing in a professional sound and lighting system to give the "rock band" feel.

Karaoke is starting to fade around this area, not in bars hosting it, but in people participating in it. Karaoke has been overdone, and I have never been a big fan of it that's why I never offered it as a service. Now rock band definitely has my interest and I think there is a BIG market for it here.

Mabye it's just my market but it doesn't seem anyone wants to pay any money for this kind of thing. Hell top dollar for a Karaoke show around here is $200

I had one request for a GH setup. It was for a trade show booth. They wanted GH projected on to a 10 ft screen in a surrounded darkened booth with concert style lighting and major sound. They wanted it for 4 days and basically I was building thier booth for them. The trade show was costing them over $5000 to be in because they had 2 booths one for thier product and one for GH. I quoted them $1200 total and the guy almost collapsed on the phone ( I thought it was cheap). Apparently they found someone who did it all up for $400

I'll shy away for now

I bet these piece can take the beating....

what about licensing?

I am guessing that buying this software does not give you a commercial license to play it in public. It might need to be obtained separately.

It may not be something they are concerned about, but I wouldn't want to have a successful guitar hero night at a bar and find out that activision or one of it's agents is looking to collect.

Anybody know anything about this?

I'm pretty sure NOBODY cares about that. Whether they should or not is a whole other ball of wax....

My events are all private anyway, and THEY supply the consoles and games... I just supply the projector and sound. ( at least for now, anyway )

This is a question that has been running through my mind. Now maybe someone knows the answer to this and can help me out!

I have been told that as long as my music is bought correctly (and not copied to MP3 or any other format) I can play it to the public, and it is up to the person/venue that hired me to pay any royalties of said played music?

I am sure there are different laws governing games used in public??

Anyone have any info pertaining to this matter?

I have been reading more and more about bars adding Rock Band or Guitar Hero for entertainment.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/01/16/rock.star.gamers/index.html

I’m thinking about adding this as a package for 2009. Any comments?

Its something I've toyed with, the main reason I haven't is that I own Rock Band for the PS3, and I wouldn't dream of putting it in a setting where it is vonuerable to being stolen or damaged. The other reason is that I've found that having something like that takes kids away from the dancing and the party, well aren't we PAID to keep people on the dance floor having fun and not off doing something like that?

Brian,
I am planning on marketing Rock Band to bars in which case it would have the potential to take-over their Karaoke nights. Yes, I DO get paid to keep people on the dance floor, but some bars don't have the room for dancing per say, but still want karaoke and other events.

I don't know... are you? Why not both? Maybe we need to think of ourselves more as entertainers than DJ's... especially with the rise of cheap music equipment and / or DJs.....

Slightly different to be sure, but I do kids bubble parties.... I do them well, adn I do a lot of them. Yet, to increase my possible revenue, I have added parachute games to my offerings. I also have ordered a few books from amazon on kids games for outdoors...

Think BIG PICTURE...... Think $$$. Think outside the box.

WELL SAID! I agree wholeheartedly with you! Do what you do, do it passionately, and don't be afraid to "go outside the box" as Papa states.

I couldn't agree with you more, sir!

I think it's a lame idea... I've posted this same post several times over the last 2 years, but I'll do it again...

We tried the whole guitar hero / and rock band thing... I did it with 2 12' screens, and a full JBL SRX system with 4 18" subs , 2 dual 15" tops, and about 16,000 watts of power as well as moving head lights, LED's, and all that... I mean big time....

It didn't fly worth a crap.. Girls were still coming up all night saying "this is so ****in' lame.... can you play some music we can dance to?""

Several reasons why it doesn't work......

The idea is about 1 1/2 years too late... everywhere here in Atlanta at least has already tried it, and summarily scrapped it. If you're just hearing about this now, sorry, but we were playing rock band in the bar christmas 07'... it's not that it's not a cool idea, it's just an old, outdated, and proven failure for bars...

It's too repetitive... the patrons there don't want to keep hearing the same song over and over...

For rock band, one lame ass ruins it for everyone else... so if everyone's not in sync, it sounds like ass...

Everyone owns a PS2 or XBOX... the bar will pay you for two weeks, when the initial gee whiz burns out (usually about 2-3 weeks), they'll then decide to save money, and they'll continue without you for another 2 or 3 weeks, until everyone in the bar finally complains enough that they drop it.

It doesn't involve enough people... interest is lost very quickly...

The people who are into the video games are usually either under age, or don't drink... the video game demographic is not known for being big spenders... (this information is based on years of having done madden tournaments, dance dance revolution, Guitar hero, Rock band, and others...)

I'm just saying, I have yet to see a single individual do well with this...

it definitely doesn't have the potential to take over karaoke, as I rarely see it last more than a few weeks..

people can stay home and listen to their kids or little brother play that all week... no one wants to hear that at the bar....

now it's a great add on for bar mitzvah, kids parties, and even corporate parties... but not as the main entertainment...

I have never seen this brought in by a DJ, the bar always supplies the game and the DJ provides the sound and music in between rounds sort in the same way karaoke works. There is usually a sign up list and your turn is based on percentage of notes hit factoring in note streak and level of difficulty.
It is a lot like karaoke where some people are hesitant to get involved until they've had a few drinks.
