ShowXpress Free, Doggle $499.00

Freestyler Free, Doggle as low as $79.00

You decide which statement is a Pro and which is a Con.

On a serious note.... I don't have a whole lot of experience with ShowXpress other than in demo mode and I've used Freestyler for almost a year now... it's very stable and does exactly what it needs to do... plus it has features I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of..... creating fixtures for it is about as easy as reading a light manual. You can be up and running with a cool light show in minutes.

I've had extensive use in both now and HIGHLY recommend Freestyler!

It's geared more toward the mobile dj.

1. Built-in DMX controller for LED RGB pars -- all you do is tell the can to be operated by the controller and it does the rest. With pre-built programs that beat to the music in all different colors or the same. It also can control all of them going static and can easily blackout.

2. Most fixtures are in the library and if not, it's not that hard to build the fixture for them. Their website is now much more friendly for people needing help with fixture building and advise.

3. For moving heads/scanners there are also some pre-built functions, but I've not had the pleasure of testing all of them yet.

4. Dongle is much cheaper.

5. NLFX now carries the dongle! So you can spend money at a ODJT sponsor.

6. Controlling lights is a breeze when you have simple point-n-click buttons at your disposal for changing things on the fly.

7. I'm sure there are more, but I'm getting tired.

And, the new interface for SXpress sucks.

I'll be heading over to Keith's next week for the very purpose of programing 4 moving heads and a ADJ Starball for his wedding... I'll be sure to post how it goes but as far as setting up the stage in freestyler it was a breeze.... I think I may have some tweeking to do with one set of his heads only because the fixture didn't exist and I made one based on another similar light.

How well does freestyler track the beat of the music?

I use showxpress, and it can't keep up with a kick or a snare, usually only hitting every other one...maybe. if there's a blast beat of double kicks, it just gives up I think.

For that reason I made identical pages on the control panel that are controlled by a tap-sync instead of music, but I'd love it to keep up with the music better.

it does a fairly good job at it. And for songs where you know there are 'Hot' spots you can double, triple or quadruple the beat. So the lights can react accordingly.

I was just playing with it and played with that feature for SandStorm. It worked really well and I was able to black out the Par Cans I had setup using the DMX 400 interface.

How do i get the freestyler software? When I typed in freestyler, the publisher was unknown. Any tips? I want to get it on my desk top and check it out. Thanks DjBizzyb53

What's the cost and what DMX interface doggles are compatible?

The cost for the software is $347 and you can either buy our dongle for $50 or use the Enttec Open DMX one for $60. Our programmers are currently working on adding support for the velleman and dmx4all and a bunch of others. We are a software company so we don't want to be tied to just a single hardware platform.

Is there a demo version we can try before shelling out the $347? So we can test it and see if it works for us.
