Sound quality of RPM/TMC/etc...

Gang -

The release of GaGa's Born this way sounds very distorted and over, over compressed. Almost to the point I would prefer getting the official studio release.

I noticed the same on both RPM and TMC.

Have any of you noticed lacking quality of certain tracks from these promotion services? Sound not talent... :)

I know it is not their fault, just pass along whet they get.

Don't blame the subscription services. It was (or should have been) provided to them that way from the publisher.

Edit: I guess I should read your whole post before commenting.

Mine sounds ok.
...and I bet you think it smells OK, too.

On the serious tip, over processing in the only way most contemporary "artists" can be produced

Next time I see ya, you can tell me what it smells like.

=)

Ed - that's the way these tracks are being recorded and mastered now. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Everything is ultra-compressed, there is no headroom at all, nothing breathes - it's just garbage.

It's a production trend, not necessarily a fault of the sub service.

I just pulled and reviewed PO's release of this one. Granted, it's not mastered as well as it probably should have been. Not much in the way of dynamic headroom.

What you're hearing on those discs is the official studio release. I'm sure it sounds better on Lada Gaga's Heartbeats headphones by Beats by Dr. Dre. :)
(subtle product placement).

As for that de-clipping software, don't believe the hype. While it may be able to make the sound file look "softer" on the screen, there's no way to take an overmodulated digital signal and back it down. Any good recording engineer will tell you that if you clip the vocals when you record them in the studio, the only way to fix them is to go back in the studio and re-record them the right way.
