I recently learned this in Michael Walter's book "On This Date In Music". This is a really good book to enhance your music history. There is some argument about what song can claim the title as the first song of any genre, but this one has potential since it was recorded in 1951.

I would have said That's alright Mama or Good Rockin tonight or maybe even some of Rosetta Tharpe's early stuff. Tharpe influenced Chuck Berry who influenced pretty much everyone after

I'll go with Jeff on That's All Right - Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup ... first recorded in '46 .. if it was a "rock" hit for Elvis, I guess it was a RnR song ..

I didn't realize "That's Alright Mama" was a previous release before Elvis. Definitely a great choice for the first Rock and Roll song. A good discovery...... the rock sound now possibly settling in...... nearing the mid 40's.
