The park event is a no go and I'm good.

Haven't all of you at one time or another turned down doing a gig for different reasons? The pay wasn't enough, not the type of event you do or want to do, a venue you don't want to work at and so on. I decided not to do this event because the price isn't right. I simply didn't want to work all those hours for $250 regardless what I used. Like I said we've looked out for him long enough doing it for a cheap price year after year. I'm fed up with being the nice guy in this case and so are other vendors as well. Which is why they won't be back.
We turn down gigs all the time. Some people are looking to pay way less than we are able to do it for. I never take it personally or feel disrespected. Some people just aren't my customer. I wish them well.
However, If we are within $50-$100, I'm going to look for a solution.

As others have mentioned, when a customer is stuck on a certain price, I'd let them know what they can get for that. For $250, they could get a rental speaker if they picked it up. For $295, we could dj any 2 hours with a small crowd before 4 pm.

I had a guy several years ago call me to do a picnic he was having in his parking lot and inviting all of his customers. He wanted to do it from 9 am to 7 pm on a Saturday. When I gave him the quote, he was shocked. It was 15 time what he said he paid for a dj the previous year I asked him why didn't he call that dj then. He said the dj got drunk and was awful. But he was still looking to pay the same price.
I said I'm sorry, but we could not even do a rental for that price. I offered a 4 hour price, but even that was more then he was looking to pay. I wished him well and hung up

I can't believe you didn't come on here and post about he could go take a flying leap for trying to take advantage of you

I would tell you to go take a flying leap but don't know how far you can leap. Just having fun with you don't take that serious.

Now what I learned is nobody takes advantage of you. It's what you allow a person to do. It's easy to blame someone else for what you allow to happen.

The guy for the park event WAS NOT taking advantage of you .. he just told you what he wanted .. You had 3 possible answers:

1: NO
2: YES
3. Possibly, but this is what you will get for $250.

You just took it personal.

I was specifically talking about the $250 he wants to pay. The $300 would have been OK. The big thing for me is not to make myself look bad regardless of how much the pay is. 2 speakers on a pole in the park in that area would sound like SHIT. The people attending the event won't know a thing about the pay and nor will they care. All they will see and hear is a DJ with poor sound. I took a stand this time because I have to start somewhere.

So let's say 10 hours....does $25 or $30 an hour make that much a difference. I guess I'm the crazy one but if I won't do it for $250 another $50 wouldn't entice me much more

I don't need this gig. I got others looking for me to do events for them. I got 2 inquires for July 15th. I know one is definite and the other a maybe. The last one I mentioned came from what I did this past Saturday. If I needed the work bad enough then I would have done it.

Damn Cho you blowing up with the gigs. Keep this up, and next time you need tires you won't have to borrow money. When are you going to repair, and paint those yamaha dsr's?

With apologies to Buck Owens, Roy Clark and the Hee-Haw gang ...

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad gigs, Mix'd have no gigs at all

BS on golden years

I would say that means you are standing too close to the wrong end of the bull, but the other end will tear you up, so maybe just step away from the bull and enjoy life to its fullest. And relish in getting to be ornery to rotten kids and people just saying "he's just old and cranky."
