I can’t speak for the specific song charts, as I think some of it is regional and some of it is dependent on the crowds you cater to. For example mine are big on throwbacks from the high school/college time period.

What I will agree and confirm is that tik tok and Spotify are game changers. Songs like gimme gimme gimme, 1985, Taylor swift songs, etc are making a come back specifically because of tik tok. For a few months love story was a must play at every wedding… why because TikTok was posting numerous videos showing reactions of love story at weddings and how hyped everyone was getting. If you’re not on tik tok and are trying to cater to the sub 40yr old client, you’re going to be out of the loop.

You are right for a lot of markets and even here to an extent is influenced by TikTok. You and I have discussed this before Taso the thing with TikTok songs are most only know the hook here that doesn't work so much. One of the most common questions I get is do you play the whole songs or just the chorus. Even the bar gig I did a few weeks ago with 19-25 year olds was mostly full songs

If I had one DJ wish I'd love to travel with you to an event and you come with me because everything I see both of us have success but it's a dramatic difference in style

I get that asked a lot (full song or partial)… my response is always I typically play the best parts and just enough so the song doesn’t get stale or boring… so 90-120 seconds or so on avg … some songs require more, some songs it’s less. My goal is to keep building the energy and never giving people an opportunity to escape the dancefloor. The response from couples is: “thank god, I hate it when the song just drags on”.

I think the biggest issue w quick mixing is that most DJ’s don’t know how to effectively do it… they don’t know the best parts of the song and may cut it too early, or not properly beat match to allow songs to seamlessly flow from the verse of one song to the the verse of the next song and therefore guests are now paying attention to things that would normally not be noticed subconsciously if done properly.

It doesn’t matter where I go (and I’ve been to 15 different states) it works if done right.

I should clarify I don't play to the fade I do beat match not just smash I just do it much later in the song. It's not very often I have ever lost a dance floor I feel the energy is pretty high. I do try to turn the dance floor a lot I usually have more over 40s than under 40s at wedding I do. What I do seems to work they keep calling back :)

I believe you are right it is definitely a skill and knowing when is the most important part. I can mix and I'm pretty good at it there's just not much call in what I do

LOVE STORY was on the request list for 2 of my last 4 weddings. Also, ALMOST every wedding has at least 1 or 2 Taylor Swift Songs requested on their list. I actually had a couple last week who had Taylor Swift on their DNP because they are tired of hearing her songs everywhere.

Gimme Gimme has been one of my most played songs this year! Abba has made a come back in popularity big time. I use to only play Dancing Queen, now there were 3 more songs added to that by Abba!

I think this video sums up perfectly what you hear from one segment of dj's vs someone like me who sees first hand the power of effective quick mixing.

That is fine and I don't disagree it's effective if done properly but where does it leave a person if the client specifically doesn't want that...and I don't mean just one or two it's well over 75 percent of the time I get asked that question. Perhaps they have seen someone do it poorly and don't want that mess I don't know. My job is to give them what they want not what I think they want

In my opinion this has more to do with your style attracting thkse that appreciate your style. My style atttacts those that seek that faster mixing style. If a client that wants quick mixing saw you and your dragged out approach, it’s unlikely they’ll call you… and vice versa with me too. It’s why I don’t attract any older couples honestly. It’s the clients that have never seen either of us that we have to do a good job qualifying. For me I always make it part of my consultation to give them insight as to my mixing style and background to address any potential issues/surprises.
