I have decided to go back to single op..and let go the idea of being a multi op.

There are several reasons.

I am going to sell my friend some of my equipment...and I am going to let him venture out on his own.

I have weighed the pros and cons...and I feel this is a better move for me and him at this point.

Now..don't get me wrong...I do have some interest in his business you see....as I get a certain percentage of each booking since I am helping him out.

And of course there are other perks which makes my cut reasonable and worthy.

I don't what the future looks like beyond this move....but I feel like this is a step in the right direction for sure.

And the best part is....I make a cut of every one of his gigs...and I have no financial risk.

I just hope he sells himself...and he does well for himself! If he does good...I do good. I am rooting for him all the way. It also makes me want to root for him since he has been my best friend from when we were back in school.

I am going to be the best man in his wedding in 2011.

How do you get a percentage of his business?

He saved his friends boat from drowning... :sqlaugh:

@Adam,

Glad to see you are taking capitalism seriously now, instead of just spending foolishly like you did in the past. Keep it up, and you won't be cleaning lockers for long... :)

There I fixed that for ya... he hasn't graduated up to lockers yet.... didn't you get the memo? :triwink:

Adam
just make sure you KEEP him as a friend...
and don't treat him like an employee!

otherwise, I think you made the right choice.

better to send him out with your help and blessing
than it is to wait for him to get pissed off at your way of doing things
leaving you under bad circumstances
trying to steal your leads
and refusing to pay you a percentage

besides, it'll give your brain a rest!

He has been bitching for the lack of events his way....and I try to tell him it's not as easy as what it seems.

But this way he can find out if I am telling the truth or lying to him.

I hope he does real well...because the percentage we worked out benefits me a bit more...considering the no financial risk dealio.

We will see what happens.

My brother thinks I should do it this way for an x amount of years...and then let him make all profit after those years are up since he is a friend of mine.

I haven't fully decided to do or not do that yet.

How do you get a percentage of his business?

Letting him make payments to me...

And also..when I first let him dj...I talked about how much it would hurt me if he started his own dj business....because without me putting him in the position to try it...he would have never done it on his own.

Now he sees $$ signs...and he wants a bigger piece of the pie.

What he is going to find out though...is it takes an investment and money just to run the business....and its not as pretty as he thinks it is.

If he chooses to opt out and goes back to just djing for me down the road..then thats fine.

Adam, Adam, Adam.....

You aren't getting a portion of his business you are getting what you are owed and unless you are selling at an inflated price you are actually losing money.

Once he's paid off what's to keep him paying you any more?

OK so what do you think he is doing now?

Even when I am paid off...the deal stands as I will get a certain percentage of each and every booking he does. Not his profits....the total of the booking.

I think I do a-ok for not having any financial risk in the deal if I say so myself.

It just sounds like another "Next big thing" you have every couple months. One of those "can't fail" situations.

In that case this guy is really bad at math....

You do have financial risk in this you are handing over a few thousand worth of gear on the friendly payment plan with not just hopes of being repayed but hopes of a franchise fee of some sort if and when he pays it off.

Now he sees $$ signs...and he wants a bigger piece of the pie.

The pie will be pretty thin once he makes payments and the "fee"

He has been bitching for the lack of events his way....and I try to tell him it's not as easy as what it seems

So basically he has very little business acumen or understanding of what it requires to run the business and you don't give hm enough to keep him busy so sending him out on his own on the frendly payment plan somehow seems like a good idea?

I don't disagree with your idea I disagree with the approach

Yup..I am basically letting the door hit him in the a$$ on the way out....putting the ball in his court.

I will do my best to "coach" him and make him successful....but the rest is up to him.

I hope he does well...and then he can realize someday that when he dj'd for me...I took care of him from day 1! I am willing to let him go out into the business world...and make that realization being he is my friend.

I may sound dumb and mean to my friend....but what I really want for him is to get to a new level in his life. I hope he can step up and handle it.

If he can't...I will have to consider some other options down the road. My wing is always open for my buddy.

On a side note Jeff:

Do I feel bad for capitalizing on my friend?

I had to really think about this with my heart...and I don't feel that I am. I feel like I am giving him a great opportunity to spread his wings and fly.

Would I reconsider the percentage fee after a few years?

I can't say for sure. Being my friend and all...yes and no. But I would hope..that he is still willing to pay me for helping him get on his feet and try something new with very little risk on his part as well. Well..a bit of financial risk....but it's his time to fly. And yes...it is written in the contract in the terms of....for as long as he djs...I get that percentage of each and every total booking that he does.

We kinda played around with the idea of last summer of me going solo..and him doing his own thing. I have been thinking about this for some time now. Him and I are going to sit down next weekend, and outline some more issues as have popped up in the last few weeks.....but hopefully by New Years 2011 he can be his own boss. And I can be making capital off of him.

so when he blows the gear up say in his third or fourth gig how will you get paid back in this deal? Also if he cant get gigs on his own you will make nothing. Im curious why you wouldnt say buy the gear within X amount of time or it returns to me. I would probably feel better in such a situation if he were to pay me out of the gear immediately.

Don't let the doomsday sayers get ya down,,,, be positive, think positive and good things will come your way,,,,, but be realistic and keep your eyes on him....

Soooo......Did ya sell the poor bastid the PILE Pro's or the Bose??:tribiggrin:
