I was thinking while eating my Crab Cake BLT and fries/cole slaw at lunch today what were my MOST PLAYED SONGS at events through out my DJ Career. By the way, my lunch was delicious today! šŸ˜Ž

Anyway, what would you say are the Top Five most played songs that you have played at events since you started. Try thinking of the popular songs you played so much in your earlier days compared to now. Don't just focus on the last 5 or 10 years.

I thought for a while about it, and I came up with these songs for me.

1. Kool and the Gang - Celebration (I played it so much back in the 2000s, and still play it at probably 20% of my events today.
2. Earth Wind and Fire - September - I believe this song is just going to stick around forever at this point. Been playing it since my Dad taught me how to DJ.
3. Don't Stop Till you Get Enough - Michael Jackson - Been playing it since I began. I was always a big MJ fan so that may have had an impact on me playing this song so often.
4. Whitney Houston - I wanna dance with Somebody - This song really was not that popular in the 2000s, it was on the top 200 back then, but it wasn't in the top 10 or 20 songs. It really had a HUGE Resurgence when Whitney died in 2012, and it has not stopped being so popular since then yet!
5. DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide - With this one, I know for a fact it has been played at 50% if not more of all my events since it was released in August of 2000. 2023 is actually the first year I have had where it has not been played at 50% of my events so far.

Honorable mentions off the top of my head...If I thought to create a top 20 most played ever list, Billie Jean would be somewhere on it towards the bottom, and Uptown Funk would for sure be on it. Nelly Hot in Here would be on it. Usher - Yeah, Cupid Shuffle would be on it. Sweet Caroline, JT - Sexyback, and Dancing Queen would be somewhere on it.

Wobble might make the top 20. I still play it at like 20% of my events
Electric Slide was HUGE in the 2000s at events...I only play it maybe twice a year in the last 5 or so years though.
Shup up and Dance with Me is in a lot of my videos since I started making videos...that might be a top 20 contender.
Danza Kuduro has been so popular since it came out. Pitbull and Kesha - Timber is another contender. Pitbull - Fireball.
Thriller was played A LOT years ago, but I hardly play it over the last 4 or 5 years. Maybe it might be on there.

In my earlier days I played a lot of Bee Gees, and Beatles. It would be cool if I kept a digital count of all the songs I have played at events, and how many lifetime plays each song has between all my events. Would be very cool if I had kept that kind of data since day 1.

Glad you enjoyed lunch :)

Lets see...

5 Billie Jean It's rare I don't play this one it's a great crossover from new to older or older to new. I usually follow up with something Justin Timberlake Sexy Back or more recently Can't Stop The Feeling

4 YSMANL. It seems to have an appeal with most audiences

3 Brown Eyed Girl it goes in waves of popularity it's odd if I don't get a request for it

2 Runaround Sue. I generally start open dancing with this one

1. Its a tie. Mull River Shuffle and Old Time Rock and Roll. Both are regulars in this area regardless if it's a youth dance, wedding or whatever it's almost a guarantee I will be asked for them. It's very rare I get a list from a bride and they aren't on it. I give Old Time the edge because it's an older song than Mull River

Honorable mentions to Does Your Mother Know. Blurred lines, Uptown Funk, Yeah, I gotta feeling and many others

I was thinking about Old Time Rock and Roll. It is still a hit and a dance floor filler if I play it today among the older crowd, and some of the younger crowd will also join in on it.

If I had made this list 10 years ago, It would probably be in the top 10, maybe not top 5 though. In the last 10 years I would say it has probably dropped down to around Number 40 to 50. It still gets played at maybe 2 or 3 weddings a year. It is rarely on a bride and groom request list these days though. I did have "Night Moves" on a couple's must play list earlier this year though, and I had 1 guest request old time rock n roll at a wedding a few weeks ago and it was played.

My VirtualDJ history only goes back to 2006, so here's the top 5 from the past 17 years:

1. Jackson Five - I Want You Back (445 plays)
2. Aretha Franklin - Respect (442)
3. Usher feat. Lil Jon & Ludacris - Yeah (419)
4. Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (399)
5. Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk (388)

I'm guessing, but I'd suspect for me its:

1) Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder
2) September - Earth, Wind & Fire
3) Party in the USA - Miley
4) Yeah! - Usher
5) I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston or Uptown Funk

I'm currently trying to avoid playing Uptown Funk if I can help it, so it's likely going to get bumped out of position.

3) Party in the USA - Miley

That one surprises me a bit. Here it was briefly popular and gets requests at youth dances these days

I am noticing it is having a "resurgence" of sorts this year with the young Millennial groups born in the 90s getting married. It was BIG up until maybe 2018, Kinda fell of for me for a few years just randomly getting played, and back this year.

So how would I go about getting the total number of plays of each song in my Virtual DJ?

I mentioned it would be in my top 20...less plays than cha cha slide, but not far behind. I have only played it like twice so far this year though.

I think I may have played it twice ever both were American couples here for a destination wedding. It was never popular in this area

Try best of both worlds Hanna Montana theme, I get a huge response out this with that generation

Right-click on the browser headings and make sure "Play Count" is checked. It'll display the play count as a column.

Thank you! All these years and I NEVER knew you could right click on the headers! Having a play count is pretty cool.

So my top played songs in Virtual DJ on this laptop since 2019 are:

1. Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance with Somebody
2. EWF - September
3. Walk the Moon - Shut Up and Dance With Me
4. Otis Day and the Knights - SHOUT
Number 5 is a TIE between
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Till you get Enough
Cupid Shuffle
Kool and the Gang Celebration
Can't Stop the Feeling

I have actually played Cupid Shuffle more than Cha Cha Slide since 2019 according to the count in Virtual DJ

No Love Shack mentions? It always gets a good reaction out here.
How about You Shook Me All Night Long?
Or Don't Stop Believing?

I could add Chicken Dance from all the school parties I used to do. I think I only played it at one wedding but those elementary school kids could listen to it 10 times in a row and still want more.

My career going back almost 50 years. Half the stuff I was playing in the beginning I canā€™t remember. But there is some things that Iā€™ve been playing since the songs came out for Corporate, College & private events. Although now Iā€™m just doing mainly college events and these songs Iā€™m still playing even though all of them recorded way before the students were born.

Electric Boogie, been playing this since the 1980s, I found it on a cassette tape I brought back from when I was on vacation in Jamaica. Later on I found I had receive it on 12ā€ from my record pool.

Cha Cha Slide, playing it since it first came out, Iā€™ll playing it at a Outdoor Movie and they will still get up and dance

I will survive - Gloria Gaynor playing it since the 70s, it died down then came back with a remix I picked up in Europe in 1993

Rappers Delight - Sugar Hill Gang, been playing it since the 70s, now there are a whole bunch of remixes.

Donā€™t stop believing - Journey This one is a karaoke favorite the last 15 years

Guess it really depends how far back we're going... all time... last five years... past wedding season... also has to do with your event type. I do on avg 60 events a year... 40 are weddings... 10 are sweet 16's, 5 are proms, 5 are misc. My music is gonna gear towards a younger avg age range. I also get trendier clients relative to the norm I feel. For example out of those 60 events, I played the cha cha slide just 3x and the cupid shuffle only 2x in the last 3 years... or over the course of 180 events give or take.
