You do one wedding in 3 years and you have become an expert !! People will set their own budget, dry or not, & open bar . That is not the DJ 's job ! Set your price point to the market & clientail you are wanting & are able to serve.
All of the bad experiences you share are not that common. They seem to follow bad choices or being sloth, Maybe not willing to take good advice.
Yes , I have had a few experiences over the years that I did not find pleasant. Moved on to better clients & venues.
Sometimes we need to look outside of the 1 mile radius.

What are you talking about with this 1 mile radius crap!!!!! The things that we have had happen I've had others post such things on here as well. I remember one DJ on here telling us that he was doing an event and a guest crossed the line touching his gear stopping him from what he was doing. He quickly got the guest to get him away from him or it was the guest took a swing at him. Don't tell me that crap doesn't happen in other places besides here. Someone saw my Club and said I must live in Newark. I used to. I was born and raised in Newark but what does that have to do with me using a club to try to prevent someone from stealing my van. Why do so called nice places to live have a police force? Because some bad people live or visit there that do bad s***. Some people give Newark a bad rap. It's not Newark. It's some of the people who live there. People live in Short Hills, NJ and nobody sells drugs there?

Who said I was an expert at weddings? I was just talking about some things I've either had happen or seen happen. You're supposed to set the price you want a client to pay you right? I've asked this question plenty of times and I don't get a definitive answer. Since we're talking weddings what is your definition of a bottom feeder DJ doing a wedding? I can't remember a DJ on here saying what they think is a crazy low price for a DJ to do a wedding today?

What I find is some DJs get bashed for not charging what another DJ feels they should be charging. They make that judgement call a lot of times without knowing who the DJ is, how long they have been a DJ or how much experience they have at doing weddings? Some can't keep their ego out of the way thinking if a DJ doesn't charge at least as much as I do they can't be as good as me. How much a DJ charges doesn't tell how good or bad a DJ is. The telling things are when a DJ consistently gets paid the price they want, people attending the event consistently complimenting the DJ on the job they do and people highly recommending that DJ to people looking to book a DJ.

Mix, we're not going down this rabbit hole. The answers to all of your questions have been answered a billion times. Review the information that has been presented. Additionally, many people have told you about the 1-5 mile circle that you refuse to leave, this is not news.

Mix I think the point is you focus on a very specific area… not that things don’t happen in other areas. You live 15 minutes from short hills… one of the wealthiest zip codes in the country. Have you ever done an event at the short hills Hilton… a stunning event center? You live 10 min from pleasantdale chateau in west orange (you’re in east orange aren’t you)… easily one of the most expensive venues in all of NJ… have you ever done an event there?

If you’re talking crime… the crime statistics in short hills and millburn and Westfield are night and day compared to Newark.I’m not looking to go into that subject, but the point is, if you want to avoid something, you can go to so many other places very close by to not have to worry about the element that you’re complaining of.

Bottom line about djs and costs… djs charge what they want and clients will decide if the value is there. Most djs charge too little compared to what they’re worth. On the flip side, there are a lot of djs that don’t recognize when they’re too expensive or are losing value and not keeping up with the market they serve. In your case, your lack of knowledge on mainstream music has affected you.

Let me say you're right when it comes to the question about price and what is a bottom feeder DJ doing a wedding. I ask that question because there is no defenative answer. Each DJ needs to charge what they feel they can get for their services and if another DJ disagrees with what they charge, what's the big deal? Do you. Keep the focus on you and do what's best for you. Taso you say it over and over again about mainstream music. Now what is that? Different types of events and clients require different kinds of music being played at an event. I'm not the DJ who knows all the stuff you have listed on a play list an event you have done. That's not me and I'm OK with that. My partner shines with that stuff. That's how it works for us. He can easily handle stuff that I can't and me likewise.

Which is exactly what Taso said.

Until you expand your musical realm (House) and your 1 mile radius, you will continue to see the same things you have been seeing. This has also been stated many times to you from many people across many forums - which leads us back to:

Reread what I posted. What I'm not good at my partner can easily take care of and the same for him.

and reread what we have all posted .. you need to be able to perform independent of anyone else. As long as you refuse to learn and change, things will remain the same for you. Hypothetically, if your partner were to get hit by a bus tomorrow, it sounds like everything stops for you.

I don't focus on a specific area. It's about where a client wants to have their event if we agree to do it. Right before I got my hip replacement surgery we did a nice event in Rahway, NJ. We go where an event is that we agree to do. We may have one coming up going to Long Island. I'm not crazy about doing it because the drive to get there may be a big deal depending on the traffic and conditions.

Be nice. You never know what might happen to you.

I was being nice. No one knows what will happen to me - but my business will continue. In business, you have to think in hypothetics. If this is YOUR business, why does it depend on someone else?
It's our business. Enough said.

You may not focus on an area… but the music you have a niche in limits you to who you’ll attract. You say your parent can help you on other music… but your partner isn’t there talking to the clients when they contact you. At the same time at this age it’ll be hard to rebrand and remarket to a new demographic when you’re so set in your ways. it doesn’t seem like you’re really running a business anymore, but just entertaining those that you’ve come to know over the years and allow you to be within your comfort zone.

I was just upset with Sonic Vision for him basically saying what he did. Like I don't know anything at all about this business. That hurt my ego a bit. I still don't know everything but I do know that over the years I've learned a lot. Taso you're right. I'm 63 and there are those who would see me as a old man which I am. So some wouldn't want me to do an event for them for that reason just assuming I wouldn't know what to do at an event for them and they are right. My friend is 71 and still a DJ. He is something like me. He won't do certain events either because it's not for him. So some 20 something looking for either one of us to play today's Hip Hop would be disappointed. We both don't have the patience to deal with a young crowd like that. My partner can deal with them better then I could and it's not all about the music.

You Taso do a great job for the brides and their guest at a wedding. Please remember I'm over 20 years older then you. This is my 35th year in this business so I don't know how much longer I have to be in this business. Let alone how long I have left to live.

No retainer nor contract! Who cares?? Communication between partners is just about as bad as the communication from the so called client!

Honestly we have done some events that we didn't use a contract. Those are the ones that we have worked for before and know no issues with doing the event and getting paid. When it comes to a client we haven't done work for in the past, then that's different.

If you know what you're not good at, why can't you work on that and improve and become a solo performer?
You stated the facts. Yes it is work to get out of comfort zone. Many years ago when I added dj's to business I never thought I would ever do weddings receptions myself but today it is about all I d along with ceremony sound reinforcement & music.
